He had never brought anyone home before. After his brother died, he didn't really date for awhile — it was too hard, to try to attach himself to someone who could never know anything about him, down to his real name. It didn't seem fair to either party, so he kept it to one-night-stands when he got lonely and threw himself into classes, football, whatever kept his mind busy enough it didn't wander into dangerous territory. He couldn't blame his parents for being curious, too talkative, now that he'd finally broken that silent promise to himself, knowing from the moment he laid eyes on Isla he needed her in his life. ❝ Sorry about them, ❞ he offered, spoken in a near-whisper once the two of them were well out of earshot, leading her into a hallway adorned with family photos, childhood memories he almost hoped she would not notice. His mother and father were nice enough, more endearing than embarrassing, and to anyone listening to them gush over him during the first course, must have seemed like the most loving, ever-doting parents a person could ask for. It was true, they always had been. To Akeem. ❝ They can be a bit . . . excitable. ❞
