Katie was twitchier than usual, her right leg jostling against the side of the bar stool she was perched nervously on. She peered around The Feather & Thorn, her hands clutched around her cider, her fingers tapping against the cool bottle with no particular rhythm.

Her first match from the mirror had fallen through - the witch she was meant to be meeting just never showed up - but she had higher hopes for this date. Maybe the person she’d been paired with would actually show this time. He’d better, or I’m chucking that bloody thing in the fire when I get home.

The pub was practically empty - not too odd for a weekday - just an older couple having an early dinner in one corner, and some girls sitting at the other end of the bar chatting about the latest dress robes. At least he’ll be able to find me, she thought. The door of the pub scraped open, and Katie turned hopefully toward it, a hesitant smile on her face just in case it was her date.
