Literary Parallels (Luke + Guy + Sync)

Tales of the Abyss is filled with literary parallels between the God-Generals and the main cast. Each main party member has a God-General that corresponds to them in some way. The most popular interpretation is that Sync corresponds to Guy. However, I think when thought is applied, several different parallels between the Generals and the party members also exists.

Luke

Right from the start, Sync is almost entirely reliant on Van for everything. Everything Sync knows about the world and how it works comes directly from what Van has told him. Who does that sound like?

In a way, this makes Sync a rather interesting parallel to Luke. Both of them were raised in a closed-off environment where they were led to believe the only person they could trust was the man who wanted to use and then throw them away. Luke was the sacrificial pawn meant to destroy Akzeriuth Sync was the pawn sent to destroy the Tartarus in the Core. Both of them were created by Van when their originals placed their faith in him. The main between their situations is that Luke was able to find other people who cared about him and Sync was not.

Sync is what Luke could have become if Luke had known of his cruel fate from the very beginning.

Guy

What are the most important parts of both Guy and Sync’s character arcs? It’s the fact that they both crave revenge. Guy’s entire family was massacred in a war he had nothing to do with and Sync’s brothers were disposed of after being found unsuitable for the role they were made for. 

Both Sync and Guy are consumed by their need for vengeance... or Guy is at first. Guy and Van entered House Fabre together for the sole purpose of seeking vengeance against those he believed caused the death of everyone Guy loved. Sync joined Van’s crusade against the Score to destroy it for giving him a life he felt was meaningless. These two, as well, were both manipulated by Van.

However, in the same light as Luke, Guy was able to create bonds. The friendship he gained with Luke and Natalia forced him to come to the realization that he needed to move on. That he couldn’t spend his entire life seeking revenge against those who wronged him and that it was better to start trying to move on. 

Sync was never able to come to this realization.

Sync’s Dialogue

This is more or less a collection of random notes I made while reading through all of Sync’s dialogue in the game.

Sync refers to his fellow Generals by name more often than not, though he’s probably addressing them that way bc he’s giving orders. (i.e. “Asch! Stop! You get carried away…” & “Largo, we’re retreating for now.”)

He ALWAYS. ALWAYS refers to Van by his actual name. Except for when he’s in Van’s presence  Even to other Generals, he refers to Van by name. (i.e. “Van hasn’t yet fully recovered.” & “I didn't expect to see you here, Commandant.”)

His most used insult is “idiot,” which he calls both Asch and Luke.

Sync also insults himself MORE than he insults other people.

Out of 68 of his spoken lines

5 of them are insults to other people

9 of them are insults to himself (i.e. calling himself garbage, worthless, nothing, ect.)

I find how he addresses Van to be the most interesting. Unlike Legretta, who only refers to Van by name when she dies, Sync calls him by his name all the time except when he’s speaking to him directly.

Sync: ...... *Sync is puzzling what to call Van.* Sync: "It was regretable." Van: Huh? Sync: "It was regretable......The Synchron level was a problem." Van: *chuckles* I see. Van: So you recalled. What about me? Although you've gone that far [to recall past events], that is not my name. Sync: "The Synchron level" Van: I am Van. Van Grants. Sync: Synchro... Van...... Van: That's right. Van: Looks like there aren't any burns [except for the small wound caused by Mohs earlier]. Does it hurt? Sync: ...Hurt Van: Is that so. I will take care of that, don't worry, Isotope. Sync: Hurt, hurt. Van: No, no. Van: Your name is...that's right. Why don't I call you Sync. Sync: Synchron level. Van: Come with me and wear this. Can you walk? List of Spells/Artes Sync Uses

Reaper’s Toll (no attribute): When the arte is used, the user pushes forward with their palm to strike the enemy, then blasts them with a powerful force, pushing it away. Sync will usually use this arte after taking damage while guarding.

Dragon Shot (no attribute): Sync performs a simple uppercut, causing both the user and the target to become airborne. Sync tends to use this after taking damage while guarding.

Ground Dasher (Earth): When the spell is used, a huge triangular chasm opens under the target, calling forth a wave of several stalagmites that rise and fall through the ground, juggling and dealing very heavy damage to all enemies within range. [ O roar of the earth! Ground Dasher! ]

Gravity Well (Earth): Creates a medium-sized black dome with lightning traveling the surface and small stalagmites on the dome's perimeter. All creatures within the dome are obscured from view, and any enemies trapped within are crushed with intense gravitational pressure. This may inflict a Slow status. [ Suffer within this oppressive force! Gravity Well! ]

Stone Dragon Ascent (Earth): When this arte is activated, the user gathers energy in their fist before performing an uppercut. The uppercut causes a localized quake that pulverizes surrounding enemies with rising rocks. [ Take this! Stone Dragon Ascent! ]

Thunder Blade (Wind): A sword of lightning smashes into the ground, and then explodes, releasing its charged material. [ O storm cloud, loose thy blade! Thunder Blade! ]

Turbulence (Wind): The spell creates a surge of wind that blasts enemies slightly into the air before causing a small gust of wind to spin around the enemy. [ Howl, o raging wind! Turbulence! ]

Flare Tornado (Fire): This spell creates a rapidly spinning vortex of fire that affects a moderate range of the battlefield, capable of lifting multiple enemies into the air while they are damaged by the spiraling flames, before the vortex dissipates and drops the enemies to the ground. [ How do ya like this? Flare Tornado! ]

Cyclone Blaze (Fire): The user rapidly ascends diagonally while spinning in a vortex of flame. This is mostly used as a counter attack when Sync receives too much damage at once. [ Burn! Cyclone Blaze! ]

Frigid Coffin (Water): When cast, the spell causes icicles to form around the target, trapping it within the formation. Afterward, a large ice shard appears in the sky and launches itself at an angle into the enemy, shattering the ice and injuring the creature before permitting its release. Cannot be dodged in the game. [ Slumber in this cage of jagged ice! Frigid Coffin! ]

Absolute (Water): Upon activation, the arte will, after a small delay, freeze the spot where the target is at the time the casting finished and afterward drop a lump of ice onto the block, smashing it and dealing further damage. However, due to this delay, it is easy for enemies to evade the spell by running outside of its effect range. [ "Rest in the silver embrace! Absolute!" ]

Mystic Artes

Harrowing Gale: When this attack is used, Sync surrounds himself with a field of green fonons and then begins to punch and kick his enemy with rapid movements. Sync kicks his opponent up into the air, performing several more kicks while the enemy falls to the ground. He then finishes with a single punch that blasts his enemies back with great force. [ Can you take this? Harrowing Gale! Now, you die! ]

Akashic Torment: In Akashic Torment, Sync slams his hand onto the ground, causing a fonic glyph to appear. Energy from around the glyph slowly travels toward the center and forms a tower of energy to damage anyone within range. [ Now you die! Haaargh! Akashic Torment! ]
