The conversation -which had started from the kissing scenes on the shows and who actually the worst co star to share that with- had suddenly turned from anyone else to the man sat across from her in the cafe. To say that was the last thing he was expecting to hear from the redhead was an understatement. He’d always had some good joke behind his sleeve to crack her up and let her relax -especially when she was finishing a bad rehearsal or it just a long day. She on the other hand, seemed to take humor in poking him with the most audacious comments ever; proof A, claiming he was a bad kisser. “Excuse me,” he said back as he looked back at Vixey, with a face that read the audacity. “That was uncalled for. All I said was that it’s obviously going to be a bad kiss if the dude doesn’t even have the decency to at least eat a mint and here you are attacking me. For free,” said Todd with a huff as he looked at the redhead. “That’s quite a bold statement you’re making.”

He couldn’t remember since when he’d been dreaming of this moment, or the leading up to it at least. Todd had always wanted this, so close to his reach by just a few days to go -marrying Vixey, becoming her husband, becoming a family. Something of his own to have and to hold. Ever since he was a kid, the man had come to the realization that he hadn’t had something, somewhere or someone to belong to. Others had parents, siblings, homes; places and people to feel a part of. But Todd hadn’t had that for a long time, ever since his grandmother was gone. And now, here he was just a few days away to have roots of his own with Vixey, the girl who’d stole his heart the second he laid eyes on her and made a fool of himself right after. How he’d become so lucky to have her love him, want him and chose him. Of course, the wedding planning was something else, stressful and overwhelming at times; but the man constantly reminded himself that the end of the road was what to look for. Them saying I do down the aisle. It did start to give him a reason to sit on the couch and simmer for a couple of minutes a day before the next task was coming, and just as he had closed his eyes to clear his head, he felt the redhead sit next to him and grab his hand, with Todd instantly leaning his head against her shoulder and smiling. “I know,” he said back, “And I get to call you my wife. We’ll be decorating for Christmas for the first time as a married couple too,” said Todd with a smile, already knowing the decorations were waiting patiently in a box, pushed to the side by the wedding planning; but eager to be taken out. “Roxie will look so cute as the flower girl.” @rewritethestarsxx

The man had been in a deep slumber that night. The day had been long and filled with work to the brim, as his uncle had taken Todd under his wing and resolved to teach the young man everything he knew about cars. To what he had absolutely no clue about, and it had turned into days and days of learning as much as he could. It was intimidating at first but soon enough, he was starting to keep up with every new fix up his uncle brought in the garage. Of course that meant that by 9pm, Todd was out the second his head touched the pillow, without so much as a glance to his phone and what notification there was on the screen. He’d probably managed to sleep soundly until past midnight by the time the noise of his phone began to fill in the room. Yet, despite the fatigue the man instantly recognized the custom ringtone, knowing that was Vixey calling. While trying his hardest to open his eyes and blindly grab the phone, Todd couldn’t help but look at the time; of course he could even find his voice -harsh from the slumber- there was the ginger talking, to what he just got comfortable with the phone next to his ear. “Sure, one glass of wine. But have you had caffeine? Cause it sounds like you have,” said the man in between yawns with a sleepy chuckle. “I’m already up, Gingerbread. But it sounds like you got a lot in your mind. “It’s not silly,” said Todd instantly as he heard Vixey say the contrary for the 100th time -he hadn’t been counting- but the man had ears and he could already tell this was important enough for the redhead to be this upset. “You’re not an idiot,” he said as he looked at her, Todd’s eyes warm, his body shifted her direction as the man listened to her vent it all out. In his opinion, Vixey wasn’t old or unfitting for any part he’d seen her play in a show. Of course, there was always a younger one with more energy coming in the door every day, something he saw as much with candidates dropping by the firehouse all the time. By the time she had finished talking, Todd had gently brought her to the couch. Sure, his jacket was resting by the door; he was dressed up to go out, smelling like aftershave and cologne, but he was definitely not feeling like going out when the redhead was crying. “You didn’t ruin anything. We can just stay here, and hangout. I don’t mind,” said Todd with a soft smile as his hands rested above hers, pressing a tender kiss on her forehead. “Honey, I know you’ve worked very hard for every part you’ve wanted in a show. But that production doesn’t know what they’ve missed by not choosing you,” said the man as he gently brushed a ginger lock behind her ear. @rewritethestarsxx

“Alright everyone, take five,” said the voice of the choreographer to the crowd who had been rehearsing for the big opening night of the show, a humble high school production but a big production filled with hardwork and pride from every single member of the cast. It was visible in their faces, young men and women with dreams of landing first auditions, getting the lead in a show, having their names in bright lights in the middle of Times Square. The prospect of Broadway was alive and vibrant. For many, this show was another stepping stone to their dreams, but for others like Todd, this was more of a hobby as the young man still wondered what to do with his life. But his friend, his dancing partner; she was a star waiting to shine, with so much to give. Whenever Todd looked at Vixey, when he helped her rehearse and practice the dance routine for a part, the man easily realized that the redhead was meant for great things. If there was anyone who would get her name in bright lights and have sold out shows, it would be Vixey. And after all of high school together side by side, he couldn’t wait to see her make it to the top and show everyone the talent she had.

He was just happy to tag along for the ride so far. Todd searched around the stage for the water bottle as he wiped the sweat off with a towel. “If we keep this up, my feet will combust from the quick step,” said the man as he sat down next to her with a smile -and a lot of deep breaths. This was some heavy cardio currently happening a couple of days after school. “I heard Juilliard’s scholarship committee is coming to see the show next week. Are you excited?” asked Todd as he looked at the ginger. He had seen first hand the amount of work and energy she had put for years in every production, every role and every show; she was vibrant, talented and a favorite candidate for a shot in the best school of arts. “It’s a good thing that we already live in New York. You’re going to save a lot in moving, trips, and whatnot,” said Todd with a laugh, talking as if she already had the shot secured, because that was how much he believed in her. While he didn’t exactly have a plan on what to do in the upcoming future once high school was over, he did have his family back in Idaho, and there was an uncle or two that had a local business. It wasn’t such a big shot, but it was at least an option. 

As her dancing partner, and friend Todd couldn’t wait to see her thrive. Feelings had developed over the years, but the man never really had the chance -or the courage to say anything. One day, one day he would. But for now, her moment was more important.

The last time he had managed to wake up without any noise or worry about making breakfast and set up a lunch box, or run against the clock; he was 20 years old and only had to worry about Roxie not showing on his shoes before the shift started. Back when things were a lot simpler. But the man wouldn’t regret any part of his life now -with three kids that ran around the house and filled it with laughter and one baby- even if it was chaotic at times. Sleep and resting had become a luxury at this point, even if the man endured and enjoyed the sleepless nights with Kyle crying or staying up late while helping Josh or Emylin with a project. Or long evenings listening to Oliver talk about his new finding in regards to animals and bugs.

To not only have a night to rest and sleep peacefully, but a whole weekend to relax without having to worry about kids. Vixey’s parents truly came through as they offered to take the kids away for a couple of days for the two to take a break. And so far it had started greatly. Todd woke up a little earlier than the ginger, without an alarm or the sound of a baby crying as he took the opportunity to stretch, take in the silence of that morning and watched Vixey as she was still sound asleep; the sight bringing a smile to his face. They both definitely needed this lazy morning to take it easy in between the chaos that was their every day.

With the most of cares, the man made sure to be extra careful as he got out of bed and out of the room, not wanting to wake Vixey up from her deep slumber especially when he knew she needed it so much. He’d stayed in bed if he wanted, but also he was quickly getting hungry and a cup of fresh brewed coffee was welcomed right now. He had barely finished a serving a cup when he felt a pair of arms around him and warmth against his back, his own hands gently caressing the redhead. “Morning,” said gently while taking her hands to press a kiss to her knuckles, “Coffee?” Todd served them both a nice cup of coffee, cream and sugar to each of their likings as they took a seat at the kitchen table. It had been so long since they’ve had the house to themselves, and the quiet. Probably before Josh was born but even then, they weren’t old enough to appreciate a luxury like that. “How did you sleep?” asked the man as he reached out to take her hand in his.

It felt like a nightmare. One that didn’t seemed to stop and only got worse the more she spoke about it. Just the simple thought of it all -and it wasn’t like Todd wanted to picture what had happened- made him sick, tasting bile in his mouth as his whole world seemed to twist without any control and whirlwind around him.

The day had started like any other, with Todd taking care of the kids’ breakfast and lunch for a new day at school. He had taken the day off from work just so he could pick up his wife from the airport after a month away in her summer tour with the Chicago show. And he would be lying if he hadn’t been excited enough to see his wife again, though Todd had been the first one to support her in this opportunity; especially after how much the show business part of her life had decreased when their children arrived. He believed her whenever the redhead said she didn’t miss it, or that she was okay with it. But at the same time, Todd knew how much Vixey loved the theatre, and how much she thrived whenever she was on a stage.

What had started as a summer job that would help later with her teaching and an incredible experience that maybe could repeat as the kids grew up, turned into his personal hell as it was all loose in the air behind closed doors. Todd was just thankful the kids were sound asleep right now, resting and dreaming away from the earthquake that was happening with their parents at the moment. The man looked like someone had thrown a ice cold bucket filled with water as the redhead began to disclose everything that had transpired while she had been away. Todd would have expected anything, but not her cheating on him. An affair that hadn’t been just a one time thing, but had lasted for who knows how much and the man couldn’t look at her right now as he took a step away from her to put some space between them.

“Don’t touch me,” he said as Todd found the nearest surface to sit down, his knees getting weak the more she spoke. His head landed in his hands, as it was suddenly hard to breathe right now. The air was heavy and it wasn’t getting any better the more he stayed there, in the same room with Vixey. “I need to leave, I-I need air,” said Todd as he stood up and walked towards the door and it was then when he heard her pleads. And that made his blood boil. “Don’t what, don’t leave? How can you even have any audacity left to say anything else right now? I can’t look at you, I can’t even be around you right now without replaying everything that you said. That you went and slept with another man plenty of times while your husband and children were far away. Just what the hell,” said the man as his face showed a mixture of anger and sadness, but mostly pain. All he was feeling right now was pain.

“Morning,” said Todd as he slipped his bag from his shoulder over the couch, catching a glimpse of the ginger as she disappeared through the kitchen door. It was safe to say that he was a bit surprised to see her up and going so early, knowing her for too long to know that she rarely got up before he was back home from a shift. But then again, things had been going pretty well for her lately, with her new show and once again weeks and days of rehearsals for Vixey. To which, Todd never complained about, but rather the opposite helped her as much as he could to make those days as easy as possible. His train of thought was definitely stopped when a dog jumped up to him to catch his attention. Roxie was big now, fully grown but still thinking that she was a puppy, reaching to Todd’s shoulders whenever she stood up and the man could only try and give her as much attention as possible.

“Hi Roxie, hi,” said Todd with a smile as he greeted their fur baby, soon the golden retriever back on the floor and following Vixey in the kitchen as well as him. “Early rehearsals, hm? I bet you’re so happy about them,” he teased with a chuckle as he leaned against the counter while watching her work the coffee machine. “Remember those months when you weren’t on a show and you could get up late in the day? Fun times,” he teased a little more only to push himself from the counter to help his girlfriend around, not before leaning closer to press a kiss to her cheek. “I brought fresh bagels and cream cheese if you want one before you leave, or take one to go,” said Todd as he took the bag still warm, already making Vixey whether she chose to eat it or take it. “You got the full day packed right? What time is the show ending tonight?”
