His ears are still buzzing; the scent of cigarette smoke and beer invading his senses. Their set is over, and while it's hardly a huge crowd, that post-performance relief still sets in, as it does every time. Some might think he's nuts to be in a band when being the center of attention is the last thing he wants... but in Keys' defence, he rarely is. That honor goes to Johnny Miller, their confident lead singer. Playing the keyboard toward the back, out of the spotlight is right where Keys would rather be.
Johnny and Curtis, the guitarist, head toward the bar to take advantage of the free drink offer given to performers, while Keys hangs back and chugs a bottle of water to cool himself down and rehydrate, his cheeks still flushed and his hair disheveled from the intense heat generated in the room during their set. Purple Starlight's drummer, Danny, mutters something to him about the show, but Keys' gaze and attention focuses elsewhere — back toward the bar, where the other two band members are now talking to a few girls.
Two of them are familiar; one being Curtis' girlfriend, Leah, who promptly yanks the guy into the kind of shameless kiss that would scar anyone for life if they witnessed it, and another... he's sure he's seen her before. "Hey. You with me, man?" Danny asks, noticing the keyboardist's distracted state. "Y-yeah..." Keys responds absent-mindedly, still intently observing the crowd as he tries to place her. Oh. Her identity suddenly clicks into place right as Curtis leads the group over and he can make out her face better.
...Chrissy. The pretty cheerleader from high school. They've never spoken, but he remembers her. Taking a final sip of water, Keys offers a smile as she and the others approach, with Curtis telling the girls his and Danny's names, followed by introducing Chrissy and the other girls. Suddenly he feels like the same nervous nerdy kid from back in school, half-expecting her to see right through him. Nonetheless, despite his nerves, Keys nods in greeting and speaks up anyway; keeping his recognition of her to himself for now. "Hey. Uh... thanks for listening to us." It's the best he can do when he's had no time to mentally rehearse something.
