they didn’t need to talk about it for her to understand what happens next. she’d accepted it, the fate of whatever this is, the day he took her somewhere on the outskirts of the city that even she didn’t know of. of course, knowing what’s to come doesn’t soften the blow any less but earthbenders are meant to be resilient anyway.
the moon is meant to be a waning crescent tonight—fitting when she thinks back to what the phases supposedly mean. the end of a cycle and letting go, but also the start of something new, which makes it easier to stomach if she looks at it that way.
“so, what are you most looking forward to?” she decides to ask instead of the other questions that roll around in her mind because they’re all selfish ones that would undoubtedly dampen the mood. her fingers curl around the blades of grass below them and she pulls her gaze away from the moon to look at him with a soft smile.
