as much as she wanted to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom at night, heading there first when meeting someone else was as foolish as meeting on kalakaua avenue in june. worse probably because of the festival itself. so there she is in the lotte world mall, first floor, looking at some of her favorite type of clothing. it shocks no one to know that she’s eyeing a varsity jacket. the one she adores most at home is beginning to look too worn. 

her stomach grumbles and she sighs, a glance at her imaginary watch before she’s checking her phone. normally she’s the one who’s late but his situation begs for more time, time that she’s impatient to give him. since they were children, they lived in a world meant to offer the utmost relaxation but she moved with the utmost urgency at times. the only time he was being rushed when they were kids was when she couldn’t wait any longer. 

without her skateboard this time, she’d more fidgety, restless, and so fingers rapidly tap against her cell’s screen once kakaotalk is open.

it had only been for a short time, ahyoung working with minhee at coex but every once in a while, she still helps out, as does minhee. she’s more than glad to see the other when preparing for one of the upcoming events. a dating website’s mixer. hearts are abundant in decor when everyone will be wearing their own on their sleeves. “don’t you think this is overdoing it a little? maybe i can convince them to let me take out the hearts from the centerpieces on the snack table at least. what do you think?” she laughs softly, head shaking as she looks over the rest of the decor. “i think they need more of your creative touch here again. who do you think designed the layout this time? oh— it could be the request of the website but... even they know better, right? it looks like valentine’s day in here.”  

walking over to one of the tables and grabbing heart garland, she draped it over minhee’s shoulders with a light chuckle. “see? you look ready for a valentine’s day party. we just need your boo here. do you have one now? how does a girl that looks like you stay single?” yura’s too open with statements like that when she’s the type against dating. romance is for people who have more free time. there’s still too much for her to do, to explore for that just yet.

she feels like a relatable meme in the moment. one of those girls who automatically stop at the sight of a puppy and have to dote on them with all the love and affection in the world. that’s how she feels anyway at the sight of the small chihuahua. what puzzles her most is how there’s no owner in sight and if it was her, she’d never let her pup out of view if she didn’t have to. with how cute he is, there must be someone missing him. 

batman says the name on the collar and she’s immediately laughing as she holds him up, the puppy licking at the tip of her nose. with a laugh, she cradles in her arms, letting him squirm against her chest and shoulder instead, paws pulling against the soft cotton of her shirt. thank goodness it wasn’t a shirt she was particularly fond or, or worried about. 

“so is your owner alfred or robin?” minutes pass and there’s no one running about looking for him or a bat signal in sight. but luckily, there’s her favorite dog cafe just around the corner and what better place to take a dog than to play with others in a safe place. she dials the number while she’s walking on her way, batman still in her arms so he doesn’t run off again.

“why haven’t they redone peripera’s glitter nail polish formula? it’s horrible.” complaints are endless as she forages through her own collection, stopping on one of her bottles from the pretty rose nail collection. sweet meringue and like one melts on the tongue, the color is barely there with one coat. the specks of glitter are a topic she doesn’t want to broach and she sighs, turning around, hand cascading messily over her shoulders as she stares at eunbi. 

their friendship, which she isn’t sure if the other would label it that without prompt, is one that started over nail polish. at least, that’s how ahyoung chooses to describe it. the truth is she nearly skateboarded into the other’s path and came so close to colliding with her. even as yura sat on the floor, hands nursing the knee that scraped against the concrete, her eyes went straight to the color on eunbi’s nails. what color is that? i have to know — and the rest was history, as the phrase goes. 

“what color are you thinking about doing next? i wanted to do peach for spring but the cherry blossoms are blooming soon so that might be more fun. i think they’re blooming soon. they better.” her patience is the absolute worse.

✧ — it’s time for a major change. // one of her hesitations when it comes to switching completely, a different college within their university and even classes that take place on the other side of campus. chances of her running into meiqi become slim to none without the intention to and she’s saddened by it. velvet mauve lips that curl into a slight pout as she regards the female next to her in one of their classes. when she first moved to seoul, she had been late and it was meiqi who brought her back up to speed. for someone like heejeong who runs straight ahead and veers off here and there when she pleases, she needed someone like meiqi to guide her back home. 

DISMISSED. heejeong has barely anything jotted down and she thinks to herself it’s maybe half a beat before meiqi asks her why. time is ticking and she has no explanation other than that. it’s time. “do you want to go to that one cafe outside of campus? you know, the one with the cute plants everywhere.”

how they met and became closer is a blur to her now. but what she does know is this: it’d become so natural, so easy to develop a pattern, to follow routine, a(n) teasing ( read as annoying for jinseok ) habit she loves to partake in. it’s why she’s over now, offering one of their favorite drinks as she walks in and pulling away to drink it herself, pretending she hasn’t left a matching one on the kitchen counter. 

she makes herself at home and anyone who’s met her in the last year and a fourth, they’d know that itself is not easy for her. it’s cold, dry when it rains in hawaii and she hasn’t adjusted to the climate, to the city. 

another sip, a soft hum, a foot that taps against the edge of his chair as he plays. an obvious recording but she has no intentions of staying quiet. biding her time, the drink fuels her, sugar that gets her fidgeting in her seat, ready to interrupt but there’s always the wait for the perfect moment. so it starts slow, a harmless question for impractical behavior later. “what game you playing today?”

june and when honolulu is drowning in tourists— which normally doesn’t bother her but it does right now when she’s been in living in seoul for six months but feels like one too— the city is drowning in rain. she’s not used to it is a severe understatement. what’s more challenging is that she doesn’t expect it so she’s not prepared when she’s caught in her first downpour. 

but what does surprise her is that it’s warm, like the rain in hawaii and she’s transported, a magic spell that carries her back home. sunkissed locks are now dampened by the clouds, gloomy and hiding the sunlight she so desperately wants to stand in. a krytonian soul that is immensely powered by the sun, a heart of steel. plaid clings to her, a shoulder slipping when she frees her hair, lets it soak in the water the way it does in the surf. there’s no walking on water but she still feels surrounded by it with eyes closed. 

she’s at peace.

she’s late. it’s not as if she expected any better from herself honestly but she knows that it’s a pet peeve of hers. then again, she doesn’t know many things that aren’t. words not meant to be taken seriously and yet they carry some truth. “excuse me, excuse m— no, okay, excuse you. you clearly saw me coming!” there’s far more occasions on which passenger traffic is more horrible than this and, worse, more offensive but she swears even people crowding onto the train in japan seem more polite than this. invisible dust is brushed off her jacket as she shoves open the door to the cafe, hands now held up in defense when her eyes meet with minseok’s. it’s not the first time she’s had to hold her hands up like this. luck is on her side when she thinks of how she hasn’t been sent to juvie before. then again, you have to be caught for that. 

“i know, i know.” tugging her backpack around as she sits down without even ordering a drink for herself first, she sets a pack of red bull down in front of him. “my official peace offering, kind, gracious, and ever so handsome sir.” suffice to say, it’s not the first time she’s had to apologize to him for something whatever it is but mostly this: a bad habit she can’t drop. one she oughta kick before he is the one that drops her as a friend. “do you want another coffee? i’m gonna go order.”
