#hiccup met him when he was volunteering at an animal rescue sheltr#*shelter#and these two fell in love with each other#all the other volunteers and staff can see how close they are#hiccup feels super isolated at school and at home and toothless had a traumatic experience that led to him losing part of his tale#*tail#but they found each other#and when hiccup is in a terrible accidents a few months later nothing can bring him out of his slump#until stoick finds out about toothless#and sees how hiccup lights up for the first time in ages when they visit the shelter#and so stoick decides to adopt toothless as hiccup's emotional support animal#ask#anon#httyd#hiccup decides to build a prosthetic for toothless#and then goes 'fuck it why can't i have one too?' and works on his OWN prosthetic#and that's how he makes genius inventions that revolutionise how prosthetics are built
