english captions in movies and documentaries when dealing dealing things said in a different language other than english are either "i'll tell you exactly what this person said in this language" or "this person spoke this language that's all you need to know" and there is no in between

case in point: i was watching a documentary today and somewhere in the documentary this person spoke in a language that was definitely not english and the captions wrote out exactly what they said in english, meanwhile every other time the captions just read "*speaking in italian*"

#tbf i don't know if it's exactly accurate because half of the time i don't know the language the person is speaking in #i haven't even talked about the wacky caption stuff yet #i'm pretty sure there was this meme about a caption in a movie that read *screaming in spanish*#idk what was up with that one #- confusion
