general : older brother of all the princes of france . before the late king was king , he had a romance with an actress of the palace theater , and so , maine was born . but the king could not have a bastard before being king , he would ruin his reputation too soon , and so he never claimed the kid as his . and so maine grew very resentful of the royal family , as he believes he should be king of france as the first son of the late king . when everybody dies at the smallpox crisis , and noir gets crowned , he immediately becomes an important character in the court as maine has the face of the late king - a very ugly one , by the way . he is very popular at court as he has this image of a very proper prince who genuinely cares about catholicism and the people - very different from noir who has a more enlightnment idea of government . he is friends with all the old , conservative part of the court . he is the main antagonist of the story ; his plans include making war against austria so he becomes marshal of france and be able to get the troops against noir to make a coup d etat and be king . he likes to sing and can be seen with toulouse singing in the gardens . he used to work as an actor in the theater . he is still forced to play there but he prefers not to ( he hates dramas )
