Sometimes looking up the meaning of the radicals in new kanji I’m learning is a fruitless effort because the current meaning is so far removed from what the original pictograms were supposed to represent that it’s completely unhelpful

But OTHER TIMES, I find out that the kanji for “train station” (駅) includes the symbol for “horse” (馬) because in pre-modern times the word was used to refer to relay stations where people could exchange horses

And I just think that’s neat

#ignore me #also the kanji for horse is a surprisingly straightforward pictogram if you know what you're looking at and I can't unsee it #the horse's head (simplified to just a big eye: 目) has a mane flowing off to the right as if it's running.#and the four small strokes at the bottom are the legs #like. I KNOW that's how this works and it still amazes me every time #also on this same wiki surfing endeavor I stumbled upon the fact that those little wooden plaques at Shinto shrines? ema?#the word is written as 絵馬 which is... literally ''horse pictures'' because I guess traditionally they had... pictures of horses on them.#...
