i think that this:

is really endearing. and it’s like… yes, objectively, it is (#myopinion). but within it’s in-universe context, especially within it’s in-universe context, i’m really, really heartened by it. it’s played for laughs and there’s a little “this is so irritating can you believe this guy acts like this?” tint to it because it’s a flashback from dean’s perspective, and following it (and sam’s objection), dean jabs at him for “always saying pansy stuff like that,” but it is extremely endearing to me because of what it says about sam’s character— because of what we’re being clued into not that you need to be clued in or told if you’re truly understanding him about sam’s character here.

sam cares. sam cares about random people he’s never met before who he will never meet again. sam cares so much that it’s a little grating (at least if you’re dean. i guess). at the end of this flashback, we get dean patting sam’s shoulder and going “it’s okay,” almost like he’s taking sam out of the emotion— which sam then doesn’t object to or deny happening when they cut back to the present. to me, this says dean said something while describing the exchange akin to, like, “had to remind him at the end there to let it go. you know how he works himself up.” (or something.)

and this is all because sam cares. i know it’s played for laughs but i love taking into account the broader context and implications, which are that sam is deeply empathetic to the point where 1.) it’s a personality trait to be exaggerated and 2.) he has to be reminded to take a step back.

i just really, really like that. sam cares.
