DAGGER

Triangular, double-edged, bronze blade, double rib in the middle. Bronze grip with narrow centre, still retains remains of wooden hook. Large, triangular, cage-shaped pommel (one missing stave).

3,000-year-old canoe recovered from Wisconsin lake

In May this year, archaeologist Tamara Thomsen made an amazing discovery in Lake Mendota in Wisconsin. At the bottom of the lake she found a canoe, about 86 cm long and only c.92m away from another canoe found in 2021.

This had already been examined by radiocarbon analysis, which gave a date of c. 1000 BC. It is now being further examined, cleaned and preserved by the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Ho-Chunk Nation and Bad River Tribe, who will work together on this ancestral canoe.

As this is the second find of its kind, the entire coastal area is now being examined more closely, so it is not yet possible to say whether these two canoes are a chance find or whether there may have been a settlement or hunting camp there.
