Daniel looks up at Louis. Louis clears his throat, shooting Lestat a sharp glance. “Not abandoned. Just…on hold. Armand has unexpected business to attend to.”

Lestat rolled his eyes at that. He would drop everything if he found out Louis was like this. "Either way Daniel. Louis is going to take you hunting now because he needs to feed too." Lestat grinned at Louis, "Isn't that right, mon cher?"

"She might have," Mina argued though she knew it wasn't going to do much good, "If he'd found a way to show her proof, she might have." Mina stared at the food, reliving the words her own father wrote, "And it's not just....the idea that Lucy and Jonathan got pulled into my family's bullshit. It's not just that I unknowingly followed in his footsteps because didn't tell us. It's what he wrote about the torture. I don't think....he even felt bad he did it. He wrote wonderings about his soul but there's not even really regret or horror there. And I suppose I'm jsut having difficulty reconciling that my father could do that. Even at their worst, I don't torture them, Lestat. Not unless it's to get information. He did it because he could. My first human kill was a hunter that did that." And this was the man she looked up to? It was never a question of wondering if her father loved her or anything like that. It was the question of the scar he'd left on the world coming back to haunt them all. "I just wish he was alive," she whispered

"Mina, she would not have because it would have been considered insanity to believe in this. Look at all the scientists who try to prove we exist, werewolves, and even big foot. They are considered quacks. They loose their credentials and careers even though they have valid proof. It does not matter how the proof is presented." Lestat told her.

"I tried to change it but it was all written off as stunts and illusion. There is nothing we can do to change that mindset. There is not enough proof that would ever make it acceptable to the public and scientific community. It is not something that people can live with comfortably." Lestat pats her hand. "No one is perfect Mina. We are all flawed beings. Most humans who do know about us do not think we deserve humane treatment. Back then it would have probably been normal to torture us. Look at how they treated witches. I am sorry you lost him and miss him."

Nicolas stiffened reflexively at Lestat's touch. It took a moment, but he deliberately made himself relax. Lestat was trying to comfort him. Why did his body react to comfort with fear? Probably the same reason it reacted to deviance with pleasure. "Am I so forgettable?" Nicolas asked, taking the wrong meaning from Lestat's words. He seemed to consider the statement about it not being his time more carefully. "Perhaps. According to the old beliefs of the Children of Darkness, we bloodsuckers are the hands of Satan on earth. I suppose he does not want us in hell yet." "But back to the point... these things are matters of the soul. If the ghost of Nicolas de L'Enfant haunts my memories, what will a physician do? The transformation and blood heal all injuries, Lestat. There is nothing wrong with me that is a matter for doctors to cure."

'You talk to them. They help you sort through things Nicki." Lestat told him gently. "Look you may not ever be better but you will learn how to deal with it better. It is true medicine would not work on us now. The blood heals physical things when you are turned." Lestat puts your bag on his bed and begins unpacking it. "All I am asking is that you try."
