"You're in love with her."

I want to get better at writing shorter things that I don't stare at for ages until I hate them, so I'm going to try doing a drabble at least every other day. This was a dialogue prompt I pulled a while back from one of those lists that went around.

"I can't believe you're leaving me for a dog."

Rami almost snorted in disbelief, but kept giving the old basset hound behind the fence her well-deserved scritches. "What?"

"You're in love with her, clearly," Felix complained, moving from where he had been leaning against the fence to squat next to Rami. He stared into the dog's big, soulful eyes, almost challenging in his intensity.

She ignored him completely in favor of Rami's fingers. Rami wasn't quite able to hold back his chuckle, and got his own withering look from Felix in turn.

"You've been petting this one - one - dog for almost fifteen minutes!" Felix wailed. "We're supposed to be on a romantic stroll, and she's got all your attention! What's she got that I don't have?"

"Well," Rami drawled, pretending to consider it, "she's got these big floppy ears for one, that's a pretty big draw." He held them out like they were airplane wings before dropping them to resume the pets once more.

"My ears can flop!" Felix insisted.

"Can they?"

Rami turned to look as Felix scrunched his eyes in concentration, trying valiantly to wiggle his ears.

They didn't move.

"Hm, I think I'll have to give this one to the dog," Rami chuckled. At Felix's crestfallen expression, he felt compelled to lean in and give him a quick kiss.

"But you get a consolation prize, of course," he grinned.

Felix glared at the dog, and Rami got the impression it was only half-jokingly.

"Come on Fe, you're right, we've been here long enough. Let's get going."

Rami stood and grabbed Felix's hand, intertwining their fingers as he started to resume their walk. Felix pressed himself next to his side, and he could see from the corner of his eye how Felix looked over his shoulder to give the dog the stink eye one more time, making the 'I've got my eye on you' hand gesture at her.

The dog wagged its tail happily in return, and Rami couldn't help the smile that overtook him as they walked into the sunshine together, hand in hand.
