June 24, 1396 – Crusaders Under the Earl of Nevers Reach Vienna

On June 24, 1396, a large crusading force led by the young French nobleman John the Fearless reached the city of Vienna as part of a major Christian campaign against the advancing Ottoman Empire. The expedition, known as the Crusade of Nicopolis, brought together knights and soldiers from France, Burgundy, Hungary, and other European lands determined to halt Ottoman expansion into southeastern Europe.

The arrival in Vienna marked an important stage of the crusaders’ journey down the Danube toward the Balkans. The force was welcomed with enthusiasm, reflecting the widespread concern across Europe over Ottoman victories and the threat they posed to Christian kingdoms. After gathering additional allies and supplies, the crusaders continued eastward to join the army of Sigismund of Hungary.

Despite the optimism that surrounded the campaign, the crusade would end in disaster a few months later at the Battle of Nicopolis. The Ottoman army, led by Bayezid I, inflicted a crushing defeat on the crusaders, marking one of the last major medieval crusades and solidifying Ottoman power in the region.
