“I’m sure you can handle it.  God never gives you more than you can handle.”

“God never gives you more than you can handle.”

One often hears this statement in recovery circles and in various versions in “New Age” language.  It is another phrase that people use to make distance from people who are in pain.  When I’m having a hard time I don’t want to be patronized, I want understanding and sympathy.

In 1990, I was deciding to move from Minnesota, I was in the midst of a court battle to protect a dear child from being taken away from a safe home, a their of my retirement money was lost due to mismanaged investing, I was being sued, I was stuck in my writing, and then I found out I had cancer.  I felt overwhelmed, exhausted, afraid, and extremely sad.

When I told this to a friend and she said, “I’m sure you can handle it.  God never gives you more than you can handle,” I wanted to scream at her.  I immediately got away from her.  I needed someone to give me a shoulder to cry on, to say it was tough, to say they were sorry I got cancer, and hold my hand and be with me.
