1703. Mart. - den 17ten - Marienburg. - Trompelfeld. - den 18ten. - den 19ten - Thorn. - Unterscheid der Preussen und Pohlen. Wir nahmen unsern Weeg nacher Marienburg, woselbsten damahls der Königl. Maj. von Pohlen Hoff-Staat sich aufhielte, passirten solches in aller Stille, und fuhren biß nach Trompelfeld, in welcher Gegend der König sich mit Jagen divertirte. Nach eingenommenem Mittagsmahl marchirten wir weiter, und kamen durch einige Oertlen, woselbsten die Sächsischen Trouppes cantonirten, des Abends glücklich nach Montwy und so bey Marienvveerder vorbey und über Rondvvis, Misckw und Scumpe zu Thorn ohne Anstoß an. Wie angenehm uns der Anblick dieser Stadt gewesen, wird ein jeder leicht daraus abnehmen können, wann Er die Annehmlichkeit und vortreffliche Schönheit dieses Orts, wie auch die liebreiche Art, den Umgang und die Sprache der Leute gegen denenjenigen erbärmlichen Dörfflen und derer Innwohner hält, die wir bißhero passirt, als welche so weit von einander unterschieden als Tag und Nacht. Dann gleichwie man da gar nichts fand, was nur die geringste Annehmlichkeit hatte, so sahe man da im Gegentheil nichts, was nicht Augen, Ohren, oder andere Sinnen ergötzen konnte: So daß einem diese Ungleichheit und Veränderung von einer Extremität zu der andern, fast vorkommen möchte, wie jenem Bauern in der Comödie das Königl. Zimmer, in welches Er schlaffend von der Miste, darauf er gelegen, gebracht wurde. Dann wir erfuhren hier in der That, was ehemahlen Lipsius in Westphalen erfahren, der in seiner andern Centuria seiner Briefe in dem XIII. XIV. und XV. solches sehr artig beschreibet. Die Wirths-Häuser, oder wie man sie da zu nennen pfleget, die Krüge, waren wahrhafftig nichts anders als Ställe, sonderlich der Schweine, dann die Antichambre ist der Stall, von dem man in das Tafel-Zimmer gehet, ohne daß man weiter als über die Schwelle der Stuben-Thür zu steigen hat. Von dem Stuben-Boden hat man diesen Vortheil, daß man sich nicht vielen Staubs davon zu besorgen hat, dann er ist nicht von Holtz, sondern von der blossen Erde, welche Theils die Kinder, Theils das Vieh, Theils die Köchin, welche ihre Küche in eben dieser Stuben auf einem Camin hat, so befeuchten, daß der Boden selten trucken werden kan: Daraus dann leicht abzunehmen, was vor ein angenehmer Geruch in diesen Zimmern seyn müsse, welcher so starck und penetrant ist, daß gewiß keine Apotheck zulänglich seyn wird, solchen zu vertreiben.

We took our way to Marienburg, whereat then the Royal Majesty of Poland’s court was staying, passed this in complete secrecy and drove until Trompelfeld, in which region the King was diverting himself with hunting. After the taken lunch we marched on, and came, through some small places, whereat the Saxonian troops were cantoning, in the evening fortunately to Montwy and so passed by Marienvveerder and over Rondvvis, Misckw and Scumpe to Thorn without incident. How pleasant the view of this city was for us, everyone can easily deduce when he compares the comfort and superb beauty of this place, as well as the lovely way, the company and the language of the people with those miserable villages and their inhabitants, which we passed until now as they are as different from each other as day and night. Since just like one didn’t find anything there, what would only have the smallest commodity, on the opposite one didn’t see anything, that could not delight eyes, ears and other senses: thus this disparity and transition from one extreme to the other had to appear to one like to the peasant in the comedy the Royal chamber he was brought to while asleep on the dung heap on which he had laid. Because here we experienced indeed, what once Lipsius in Westphalia had experienced, who in his other Centuria of his letters in the XIII. XIV. and XV. described this very politely. The inns, or, as one is used to call them there, the Krüge, were truly nothing more than stables, especially for the swines, because the antechamber is the stable from which one goes into the dining room, without having to go further than over the threshold of the living room door. Of the living room floor one has this advantage that one does not have to remove much dust from it, since it is not of wood, but of the bare earth, which in part the children, in part the livestock, in part the cook, which has her kitchen in just this living room on a fireplace, wetten in such a way, that the floor can rarely become dry: From this it can then be easily deduced what a pleasant smell has to be in these rooms, which is so strong and penetrating, that surely no apothecary will be adequate to dispel such.
