The Death of Nicholas & Roland Hannon Smallpox snuck through the city of Windenburg faster than one could blink an eye. Many families lost loved ones during the summer epidemic including Mary Virginia & Peter Hannon. Both of the Hannon boys, Nicholas and Roland, did not survive the outbreak and the loss was a devastating blow to their family. None felt the loss more deeply than their mother, Mary Virginia. The death of her sons changed her almost instantly. Once a well-known socialite in the community (thanks to her family being southern royalty due to the success of her father’s company within the lumber industry), Mary Virginia turned into a shut-in and rarely leaves the darkness of her bedroom. If she leaves her room, it is only to sit by the window and gaze into the endless depths of Lake Windenburg. Peter often tries to console his wife however, he too can barely process this unexpected loss. Only time can heal this family.
