A couple years ago, my best friend and I watched a whole bunch of 1950s PSAs on YouTube for fun. One of the videos was just “A Day in the Life” of an idealized white, suburban family with a stay-at-home mom and breadwinning husband and 2.5 kids. It was all very Leave It To Beaver. Then the camera followed the patriarch to his job at the factory, where he explained in voice-over how he was the foreman and he represented the union’s demands to the boss.
What was this pro-union propaganda doing in what was supposed to be a Reaganite’s wet dream? What Bolshevik inserted this anti-American drivel?
As you can tell, I still haven’t gotten over the cognitive dissonance.
