Horror in a Hamlet
Post the Lestrange brothers’ thread: Havoc in a Hamlet The Dark Mark hangs over the smoking wreckage of the small village
The first time he had seen the skull and snake green against the sky, Wyatt had not known what to think about the display. Honestly, he had just been glad to not be one of the blokes in Accidents and Catastrophes. The obliviators had really had their hands full. This time would not be so spectacular. The area was much more remote and rural. It was the middle of the night and the middle of nowhere. The muggle exposure would be minimal.
Especially considering the initial report of the efficiency of this attack. All signs pointed to the worst. They were here, because everyone was dead.
The gruesome ruthless of these executions had been enough to merit hit wizards investigating and securing the scene. An alarm had been sounded. Initial responder had called for backup and retreated to secure a perimeter. And now, here he was. Lucky him for catching this case...at three am. He would have to send Moody a really shitty cigar, because he had to have something to do with Benjy getting pulled into work this. He’d been a quite comfortable bed not too long ago--and not alone either. In his domineering way, Benjy had left more than a few marks on his late night companion, but he hadn’t gotten out of the flat without hints of how he had been spending his time. The quick shower in a foreign bathroom with unfamiliar soap had him smelling not quite like himself.
Benjy was sober only through the help of potions, but the elixirs were really effective. He didn’t feel this sober when he hadn’t even been drinking. The hint of stimulant that came with taking the potions made everything just a little bit more heightened. The edges of the world were sharp, and they eagerly cut and scraped against his nerves. He itched for a fight. Unlikely he would get one here....and it would be far too late to find a brawl at a pub by the time he got out of this place. The itch would not get scratched.
The cover the forest gave them only protected them from being seen, which was why they had cloaking charms in place to disguise them against magical detection. The night was completely quiet. Summer had come, but there were still last fall’s leaves underfoot. Conspiring with tiny branches, it seemed each step was a cacophonous announcement of their presence.
He was ready to move in. He ‘knew’ the worse was true already. He could feel it. The cowards responsible for this were already gone. The display in the sky was just there to taunt and terrorize. He did not experience any of the fear the pathetic sods had wanted to insight, but his pride did prickle and swell at the jeer. He’d figure out who had done this--he’d figure it out and he’d be coming for them.
“You see anything?” Benjy asked in a low whisper. He’d handed the omnioculars off to Doe to take a look after he’d done an initial quick sweep with the lens over the decimated township. Smoke obscured most of the details of the rumble, but the glow of dying flames in the inky black of night showed the outlines of destroyed buildings. Nothing seemed to be properly standing anymore. Clouds drifted on and the near full moon shone down, giving a better view of the scene that waited for them. What a mess...
