I was hoping to see Viktor once more before leaving the Wombats hostel, though unfortunately didn't get to. Though Kev and I did leave at 8am, so he probably wasn't awake.
Today we were going to Camping Thalkirchen for Oktoberfest! Instead of doing this by ourselves, we decided to go through Topdeck. We got our own little tents, and were given hot breakfast, plus it was cheaper than staying at a hostel and they drove us to the Oktoberfest grounds.
So once we had settled into to our tents and met our neighbours - who were all Australian or Kiwis, except for the one canadian. Tom, the canadian guy actually looked very similar to Dave Franco. It was so interesting meeting all these people, one girl was an au pair in Amsterdam, one of the Kiwi guys was freshly 18 and this was going to be his first time drinking and overseas. It really was a whole bunch of different people and it was so much fun talking to them all.
Topdeck were going to take us on a walking tour of Munich which Kev and I decided to go on. I mean, we had walked through the city numerous times, but now we would know what we were looking at which would be good. After the tour was over, my new group of friends and I decided to have lunch at the Augustiner Großgaststätte. I think I had frankfurters, but I do know that the beer went down far too easily. After lunch we all went shopping to get our Lederhausens and Dirndls.
Because we were all backpackers we couldn't really be spending over 80euro for them, which wasn't going to get us good, traditional looking clothes. I found mine for 50euro, it was red and black so I was happy. Me and another girl lost the rest of the group, so we got back on the bus to go to the campsite.
Once at the campsite I looked at my Dirndl and it still had the electronic tag on it. I had to go back into town. Ergh. So I put my coat back on, got straight back onto the bus and went back to New Yorker (the store I bought it at) to get the tag taken off. Let me just say, this was very hard to convey my message to a girl that spoke little english and me who spoke little german. In the end, it was all sorted out and my dirndl would no longer beep as I walked out of stores. *it didn't actually beep when I walked out the store with it the first time*
Seeing as myself and the other girl were back in the city centre we decided to walk around some more and go thing we did, we ran into the rest of the group. Off to the Hofbraühaus for drink and dinner.
This was the first time into this building - which was where the nazi party was started and was almost destroyed in WWII - and it was huge! The heat when you walk in is insane, apparently this place gets full before 6pm every night of the week and 150 tables are automatically reserved. Helpful tip; places like hofbraü get extremely busy, and your waiters will treat you better and come back more if you tip them the first couple rounds. This is also true for Oktoberfest.
So there we all were, drinking steins, I tried Weißbier for the first time and holy crap that beer is smooth. It was amazing that we actually got a table so quick. The last bus back to the campsite was at 11pm, so as long as we made it there by then we would be home safe.
This night got pretty messy pretty quick. We were playing a game of 'Save the Queen' where you get a coin that has the Queens head on it, and drop it into someones drink, that person then has to drink however much is left in the glass before the Queen 'drowns'. And poor canadian Tom. A stein had just been placed in front of him when the queen fell into his glass.
But he did it! He had people from all around us cheering him on! I honestly don't know how he did it, though he did look rather sick at the end. I don't blame him. After a few more rounds of this it was 10:30 and we had to hit the road back to where the bus would get us from.
I remember trying to get on the Contiki bus but they wouldn't let me, even though I was going to the same place they were. But soon enough the Topdeck bus arrived and I was on my way back to my freezing cold little tent, where I put on about 3 layers and crashed on my little blow up bed with Kev snoring away beside me.
