my problem with modern aus is that they never seem to fit right. (this applies to the 2000 movie, 2012 tour, etc.) for the most part, it works--Heaven on Their Minds through to probably Hosanna is fine, plus various other parts of it, but then the analogy breaks down right around Simon Zealotes, at least in the 2012 tour. Jesus is clearly the leader of this whole anti-capitalist rebellion, but protests when Simon points it out? what did he think people were following him for?
that’s not the only thing. see, Judas is right--if he’d come today, he could have reached a whole nation. in any era with mass communication, there’s no reason that everyone would turn on Jesus the way they do in JCS (and, i guess, in real life. i keep forgetting about that). it’s easy enough for Caiaphas and Anna to influence the crowd in the original setting, but in modern times, with our fact-checking callout-culture hivemind, i feel like the crowd would turn on the priests rather than Jesus.
you’re also asked to accept that this is in a place where execution, especially without a fair trial (come on, nothing about Pilate’s “trial” is fair) is still a viable option--which, i mean, i guess. there are certainly places in our world today where that’s the case. but things like Herod’s scene in both movies and the anti-capitalist premise of 2012 imply that this is happening in a 1st world country, probably the UK or the US, where this kind of trial and the horrible, bloody execution are definitely illegal.
not that i don’t adore the 2000 and 2012 versions, of course, and i absolutely get what they’re trying to do. it’s just that the play itself doesn’t quite fit the concept.
