February miles
February turned out to be the kind of month I was hoping to have in January, but January had 2 weeks of training cut out due to my calf injury.
So February rolls around, and I surprised myself again with how easily I could slip back into base mileage! 😵
There were still many quality speed workouts sacrificed, but I’m hoping to get to consistent speed work again in March.
Races
0. Ain’t no injury comeback got time for that!
Injuries
None. Calf strain from January still had the potential to blow up again though.
Sickness
None.
Learnings
A calf strain can be handled similarly to how I’ve handled my hamstring strain last year. By stopping running instantly, and then going through this 4 phase injury comeback routine, I can slip back into base mileage.
I go on a lot about base mileage. Although this has no doubt dropped since my peak fitness last November. After a strong summer, I could handle 70-80 mile weeks pretty well in the fall.
Right now it feels as if 60-65 mile weeks is a comfortable base mileage, 70 miles is about the top end of that. If I can put this January injury behind me and get as consistent as 2015, I should be able to get into 80-90 mile weeks by the summer.
