Moguls, What makes a “Champion” Course?

As the final weekend descends on the 2019 FIS World Championship, Moguls takes the center stage on Deer Valley Resort’s Champion Run. It is one of the most storied slopes in all of freestyle skiing, as Champion Run has been a highlight stop on the FIS Freestyle World Cup tour almost every year for the past 18 seasons. Champion has been the site of 56 total moguls World Cup competitions, the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and two prior world championships all taking place at Deer Valley, the venue’s history is rich. The slope is considered the maker of champions because every Olympic moguls winner in history has also claimed a win at Deer Valley. Interviews with athletes confirm that this is the place to win and deserves elated bragging rights to its victors.
The course length is 813 feet with (248 meters) and was specially designed in 2002 to meet the exacting specifications for International Federation of Ski (FIS) event courses. In 2002, for the Salt Lake City Olympics, Champion Run was designed and earth-graded with these consistent, regulation-profile, standards. The steepest section of Champion Run is at the top before jump 1 as riders exit the gate, but in general the slope averages 28 degrees in pitch.
The world-class Deer Valley grooming team, unparalleled in the ski and consistently rated the best among North-American ski resorts play a critical role in the course construction utilizing the winch-cat technique, where the Snowcat is tethered to a fixed anchor on the top of the run given the steepness of the slope. The ample snow from recent storms is then sloped with precision and checked by probe for proper depth coverage. Nothing is built randomly, the entire course is measured out to comply with FIS specs. Everything is laser measured including course width, length, finish corral length, distances from the start line to the first jump and second jump to finish, jump sizes as well as bump width. The moguls are set approximately twelve meters apart laterally and each is tool shaped than ski carved with a team of Volunteers.

Shown in these two photos According to the event host, Deer Valley, for Saturday's Dual Mogul men and ladies events require that four “zipper lines” be built (a zipper line is an alignment of moguls directly down the fall-line, over which skiers literally bounce off the top of every mogul in succession).
The snowcat operators are also critical in building the jump tables, the grades and in grooming the sidelines, as well as the TV camera platforms along the way. The event crew is responsible for installing the safety fence and the protective pads while the resort’s own electricians are laying power and TV cables on the outer perimeter of the mogul course, so that projectors can be installed and oriented to light-up the venue. Then the under the strict standards of FIS by both course designer and the FIS Chief of Course, as shown in the diagram below.
The course may be the most perfectly designed course on the World Cup circuit. Because of the conditions due to the ample natural snow that has fallen in the past weeks and the precision design of Champion Run; it is the perfect run for current champions and future champions to showcase their talents. Tonight and tomorrow, the best efforts have been made by a huge crew and event officials that terrain will not have a marginal effect on outcome of the competition.
