Watchlist #4: Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

0/5. I was really looking forward to this one. The premise is very fun: a biopunk rock opera. Unfortunately, the vocalists are of varying quality—mostly bad, a couple mediocre, some actually painful—and the lyrics are even worse. I couldn't even finish the movie. Literally unwatchable. Sorry :/

Watchlist #??: City of Lost Children

5/5. Weirddark children's fantasy. It's for children in the way Coraline or A Series Of Unfortunate Events is for children. If you like Psychonauts and Spy Kids you will like this movie.

Watchlist #8: The Wind That Shakes The Barley

4/5. Set during the irish war of independence. Narratively unremarkable, but great politics. Characters aren't characters as much as they are vehicles for their politics.

Themes: leftist infighting 💯👌, ideological commitment

Watch list #7: The North Water

3/5. The story of a doomed arctic expedition. The Terror but not as good imo. However, Jack O'connell is deliciously wet and pathetic, and that makes up for a lot.

Themes: imperialism/colonialism, capitalism, greed, The Evil Of Man

Scream VI and Evil Dead Rise are my front-runners for favourite films this year, I do like the themes present in Rise (namely wealth inequality, the pressures of parenthood) and Scream VI returning to some well-trodden ones (the horrors within families, legacies). It helps they were both absolute blasts.

The two must-watches that are glaring omissions right now are M3GAN and Infinity Pool. I suppose Beau is Afraid I’ve missed too, but that one is a bit of a beast and will require quite a bit of an investment. Wild as shit it even got made though.

Note: Project Wolf Hunting though a 2022 release, came out in my region (beyond its film festival premiere) in 2023 so I’m counting it here.

Additional Note: Renfield might not be a favourite, but it’s gore is so good you guys and it’s just a good time overall, definite recommend.

Probably the most expected frontrunners. All I’ve got to say is Yellowjackets continues to impress and The Last of Us blew an innumerable amount of Walking Dead seasons out of the water (but the Darabont stuff is pretty good)

Watchlist #6: Klaus (2019)

4/5. A Christmas propaganda movie, but it's very good for what it is. Beautifully animated. Kind of like Terry Pratchett's Going Postal if the postal service were hybridized with Santa's workshop. Not so sure about making the Sami people Santa's elves; that felt pretty iffy, near yikes, to me.

Themes: recovery, community, the kids are alright.
