My gift for @moustawott for the Holiday Exchange! The prompt was for a fantasy dalliance for the KCD gang WHIIIIICH tbh I think I may have missed the mark a lil bit, but, much like Hans I was very enchanted by a unicorn immediately & totally :^)

Here’s my piece for the 2025 @kcd-exchange! My giftee asked for a KCD feyverse, so here’s me putting wayyyy to much worldbuilding thought into it XD

Henry did not expect to find a high fey in the outer wilds today, so far from the safety of the Sasau Grove. The poor thing obviously wasn’t prepared for the harsh exterior, dressed in garish colours and fine fabrics. His large yellow wings, made for parading around, surely painted a huge target on his back, and Henry assumed the scratches and bruises he bore were gained after trying to escape some predator. The lordling was lucky Henry stumbled upon him right as rain began to pour—or else he might’ve caught a nasty cold.

The first step of design-based worldbuilding is determining a motif. So the question I asked myself was: What kind of fashion would butterfly people have? The obvious answer was: based off flowers! So that’s how I settled for butterflies and flowers, a most logical aesthetic pairing.

Now, design motifs chosen, we need to pick some real-world inspiration. And when it comes to European fashion, which century reflects the appearance of a flower best? The 16th century of course! Tight hoses and colourful puffy jackets, it reflects the idea of a flower stem and petals perfectly! Moreover, Hans’ colour easily transfers over: green hose like a stem, yellow and red for the top like many flowers.

Then, unto Henry. My first though for his design was: how would it contrast with Hans’s? Obviously, one important aspect of the relationship between Hans and Henry is their social class gap, so I wanted to represent that. Medieval fashion already distinguishes social status by the brightness of the colour of one’s clothes, but here, I decided to make it even more exaggerated. Henry is dressed in all brown, with motifs inspired by mushrooms, which is still a woodland motif, but much less well-perceived than flowers.

The choice of the wings is also deliberate: Hans is a swallowtail, bright and ostentatious, while Henry is a hawkmoth, more muted yet still elegant.

Finally had the opportunity - thanks to Viiscaria in @kcd-exchange - AND perfect idea to do my own take on my favourite brothers sharing their father's craft. You don't understand their relationship is EVERYTHING to me
