Day thirteen

Cheating here yet again.

Just hold on is a summertime song for me. The energy of it is brilliant.

But also Rock me with a lovely, lovely Louis pre- chorus, which shows how he could make songs his own even then (there’s a live version somewhere where he forgot to sing the chorus and it’s just...flat)

Day 14

Song to be played LOUD

Kill my mind is the only option here. No contest. This is a song to be performed live. It gains a magical energy. I liked the song before, but then I heard it in Madrid and...and then I really understood what this song was about.

Day 15

Song to drive with windows rolled down

We made it

It’s a lovely chill song to take on a long drive, just the empty road, music and you. No need for speeding, there’s no urgency, no adrenaline spikes, there’s just the quiet we made it and the wind.

Day Seven

Fearless.

My personal canon is that this song is a commentary on music industry (among other things) and about being really, staying real and staying true to who you were (do you still remember feelin’ young) despite the consequences (strong enough to get it wrong in front of all these people).

This song about fighting to stay true to yourself or alternatively loosing yourself to the expectations of others is such a universal story it deserves to be put on a screen, even if only for 3 odd minutes.

Day Five:

Most underrated song: Just Like You

Hands down. This song, it’s message, the lyrics video... it all says so much, if we are only willing to listen. I think it’s often forgotten because of the more successful songs he released individually and the album, but Just Like You has such a strong message on so many levels....

Day Twelve

Favourite song Louis ever wrote

This one is really, really difficult. (I generally have problems with choosing just one).

So let me give this distinction in two cathegories, solo work and one direction songs

One direction:

Through the dark and what a feeling

I love his lyricism, the way he constructs his songs. Of course it’s difficult to know how much exactly of these songs he wrote, but both have been consistently been called his songs. I love the images he evokes. And these are some of the best.

Solo work

Walls and Only the Brave

These two are amazing, but I have already written extensively about this.

The only fault of Only the Brave is that it’s so short. It’s one of the things that make it unique and so good, so it is a bit paradoxical.

Day ten: song you’ll never get tired off: walls and only the brave

Whenever I listen to either of those two songs, I discover something new. The changes and layers of ‘walls’ and the seeming simplicity of ‘only the brave’ are magical.

Both songs are ones I could and did and will listen to on a loop from time to time

Day eleven: favourite song to dance to:

Miss you and Just hold on

I like post punk/pop punk and miss you is a great song, that has all those stylings. It also fits Louis voice so well. I wish he recorded a few more like this one.

Just hold on is something I already waxed poetics about. I love this song. I really, really love this song. Which is interesting as I am generally not an edm.

Day six:

Favourite solo song: it’s probably a tie between walls and only the brave.

Only the brave is something else entirely, I am actually considering tattooing some of the lyrics. The way they all resonate with me, the layered understanding and intepretation is magic, especially combined with the raw production.

Walls is brilliant, evocative and easy to relate to as well. I love the arrangement, as it puts a twist on a very classical way of producing Brit pop and pop/rock songs.

Day eight:

Song that make you cry:

I’m not really a person, that cries a lot. That said, I think the song most probable to make me cry is Two of us.

It’s raw and visceral and real. It’s grief at its most honest, but also optimistic in a sense that I always admired but never had the strength to archive. It’s aspirational.

Day 18

Walls

This is cheating a bit, but it has to be this song and this video.

The narrative presented in that video, the way the images correspond to the lyrics, the way it tells it’s own story...

Walls is brilliant and multilayered.

Day 19

Song with my favourite lyrics.

This one is really difficult, because from what we could see Louis is a really talented lyricist, whose songs are really open to interpretation.

I would choose only the brave normally, but this whole song is one brilliant verse after another. My favourite would be “like there ain’t enough dying stars in your sky”

With memories playing through my head

This is an expression of grief, that anyone could relate to and understand, that anyone who lost someone has experienced.
