大 is big, but it’s also large, old, great, heavy, strong, loud or major depending on the context... it’s the character you use when you want to say something is big. 

大哥 (dà gē) is the older brother, 大师 (dà shī) a master, 大片 (dà piàn) is a large area and 大部分 (dà bù fen) is the majority.
