Why Until Dawn should *only* be played with friends
Cast: Boi Big Chill Mad Dolphin Hunter Buttercup Chainsaw
SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
There are many ways to play a game and I believe one is just to watch someone else play and see their reactions to different acts.
So, when is the best time to interrogate your partner if they cheated on you? Boi Big Chill thinks it’s when they are hanging precariously off the ledge. Of course it was hilarious to the rest of us, mostly because he refused to heed to our words of retreating to safety. Things did not end well.
Until Dawn, the 2015 homage to survival horror movies of yore, is an eerily creepy game, and the only game I replayed immediately after completing it. But I realised the most fun I’ve had is when I watched others play this beautiful masterpiece.
As I watched my friends journey through the game I realised just how different we are temperamentally. With every choice they made the story branched towards newer areas, and even after having sat through three playthroughs I was seeing new things in the fourth.
I had read somewhere that the first choices that people make in video games are quite likely to the choices they would make in real life. (But then how often do you face the choice of sparing the life of an alien or kicking them out of the window? Yes, Commander Shepherd, looking at you!)
Maybe there’s no better way to understand a person than by the choices they make, possibly under duress. Yes, Commander Shepherd, you again, and Boy Big Chill, who let go of the character’s sister off a cliff, because he could not make a decision in time.
So while my utilitarian instinct was to try and save everyone in the lodge even though I failed to save myself, Buttercup Chainsaw - an Ayn Randian objectivist - believed in saving herself and that all individuals are responsible for their own well-being. In comparison, both Boi Big Chill and Mad Dolphin Hunter tried to save the ones they could, while not fretting over the ones they couldn’t.
There are many ways to play a game and I believe one is to watch someone else play and see their reactions to different acts and at times gloat silently in your knowledge of things to come. Until Dawn (2015) is a concoction best enjoyed with a bunch of friends.
