A very special #31daysofgraves: day 21 - accidental death Gordon Templeman was a crewmember on the S.S. Princess Sophia. The Princess Sophia was a Canadian Pacific coastal steamer. On October 24, 1918, while travelling in poor weather from Skagway, Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia, the Sophia ran aground on Vanderbilt Reef. Several ships came to the Sophia's aid, but the captain refused offers to evacuate the passengers, reasoning that they would be more comfortable staying onboard, and that the weather would soon improve.
The weather did not improve. By October 25, the Sophia was still stuck, and the weather had deteriorated. Removal of the passengers was now impossible. The rescue ships were forced to retreat to shelter, leaving the Sophia alone on the reef. At 5:20 pm, the Sophia radioed that water was coming in, but the storm prevented any ships from coming to her aid. When daylight came on October 26, the wind had died down, but it was too late. All that remained of the Sophia was her foremast, sticking out of the water. It is believed the rising waves dragged the Sophia across the reef, tearing out her bottom, before pulling the ship into the deeper water of the inlet, where she sank. All 364 people onboard died. Gordon Templeman was 21 years old. He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, BC.
