Birthday Thoughts....or Rants...No.... Definitely Thoughts.
As the clock strikes twelve and I release a huge sigh of relief that my 35 (gasp!) birthday is over, I'm happy to say that even though 35 is a milestone I didn't expect to reach in the position I'm currently in, I really have to give myself some credit. Yes, I'm single and 35. But I'm also someone who's lived in 4 countries and spent the last five years traveling the world. Did I ever think that at 35 I'd be single and living in London? HELL NO! But I also think that's what's so incredible about my actual life. No, it's not the life that I thought I would be living as a Minnesotan girl from EP. I didn't marry my high school sweetheart or end up with the white picket fence in a Minneapolis suburb. I sometimes feel like us women are too hard on ourselves. We spend too much time trying to be whatever it is that our society wants us to be. We beat ourselves up trying to be the perfect woman, the perfect wife, or the perfect mother. I'm NONE of those things! And maybe this is the birthday where I tell myself that that's okay. What I have ended up with is a life that is full of adventure and unimaginable success. Everyday is filled with unknown surprises, travel, acclimating to new cultures and meeting incredible new people. And I'm lucky enough to have even made some lifelong friends along the way. I've learned some unforgettable lessons and haven't looked back once. No, this isn't the life I envisioned when I was 18, but maybe it's even better! Maybe I'm living the life I was supposed to live, instead of the life I thought I should live. Or..... just maybe..... this is the exact type of crazy rant a 35 year old single woman has at the end of her birthday night when she's in the midst of a full on mental breakdown. Hahahaha! Either way, this is my life. Whether I meant to or not, I chose this. And good God, what a hard, rewarding, insane, amazing life I have chosen! Sometimes I hate it, sometimes I love it, but I ALWAYS appreciate those of you that have been along for the ride. You have supported me through all of it, and for that I am one lucky, single, crazy cat lady, 35 year old, ex-Bruxellois, Londoner. And I literally could not be happier about it. I love you all so much!!!! Goodnight.
