✩.    Fingers tapping lightly against metal holding, if he had any lips left he would’ve been chewing them. It’d already took quite some time pacing across the deck to get to that point, yet even then he still hesitated to finish his ascent upwards. It was always so difficult to tell how to act in the moments outside of jest, try as he might to adjust to the new times—  but he’d never let that stop him before, had he ?

     Letting out a silent laugh at himself and chiding his own indecision, he resolutely climbed up the rest of the way into the crows nest, rapping his knuckles against the floor as his head poked up into the room —  and surely enough, there his eyes caught  ( not that he had any eyes ! )  Zoro hard at work. It was inspiring, truly, even if his bones felt tired at merely watching the other.

“ Zoro-san ? ”   he called out, pulling the rest of his body into the room,   “ Apologies for the interruption !  I was wondering if you had any sword oil — or something as such — that I might borrow for a moment ?  I seem to have misplaced mine, yohoho ! ”

     Misplaced into the ocean, after having been startled by one of Usopp’s creations, and consequently fished out by the young man after he’d gone diving after it   ( how lively life was aboard this ship !  ).   In most cases, he’d simply wait until next time they dropped by an island to restock, but...  it’d already been quite some time since he’d last polished his blade, and their lovely navigator didn’t seem to have much hopes for populated land any time soon. Surely, it couldn’t hurt to ask their resident swordsman ?

@3style asked: who's the strawhat kuina finds herself spending the most time with, whether by choice or similar patterns?? similarly, which of the crew does she gravitate towards most, find the easiest to be around?? who of the crew took her the longest to warm up to??

kuina is definitely more of the loner type , especially pre-thriller bark when she mainly treats her spot on the going merry and the thousand sunny as her mainly travelling concurrently with the straw hats. once thriller bark happens and she realises just how all-in she is for luffy and the other straw hats , kuina finds herself getting closer to the other crew members. she tends to gravitate towards robin , brook , and chopper ( later jinbei ) as the ones she seeks the company with. it takes her a lot longer to warm up to sanji , mainly because their differing beliefs on women. for a while , sanji would try to fight kuina's opponents for her or try to " protect " her from blows when they were in the same area , and that pissed kuina off immensely. it takes a lot of time and conversations before sanji stopped and the two of them could co-exist. sometimes , though , they're still a bit touchy , but kuina would still kill and/or die for sanji.

kuina can't help but roll her eyes as she sets down a bottle of their favourite beer right next to him. ( against any sane doctor's orders , but she felt like giving them a bone for once. ). ' yeah , yeah , you lazy-ass lush , i snuck some in for you. '

she sits down next to their knees , facing towards them as she just looks at them. kuina had known that the gap was still large , but she hadn't quite expected such a one-sided defeat. it was only because kuina knew first aid and mihawk's benevolence that zoro wasn't dead right now and their part of the journey to the top was over.

still , it's not so much the fight or even their near-death that has kuina looking at zoro ( or , at least , not completely ). the vow they said before falling unconscious is still working itself over in her head. the weight was heavy , just as heavy as theirs was all those years ago. she sighs before patting his knee.

' now we know how high of a mountain we have to climb , ' kuina says , determination lining her tone. ( she'll leave the vow alone , and maybe she'll regret that in the future , but unless they will bring it up themselves ... ). seeing mihawk in-person ... shivers ( not from fear , never from fear ) still travel down her spine. his form was beautiful , every movement necessary and yet with its own flourish. ' and we will. '
