#5KFriday ~ I listened to @lavernecox on “Unlocking Us” with @brenebrown on my run today. Disclosure was released on Netflix today; a documentary on trans history and media representation. I thought about how our community has historically been commercialized and sensationalized, and how that has shaped society’s perception of the trans community - and how we’ve internalized those narratives. With particular regards to trans women of color. I challenge my #5KwithRae buddies (and everyone really) to make time to think about the trans community and the intersections of marginalized identities - what do you know? #5KFriday ~ my word for the week has been “restraint.” When I’m in emotional pain, it’s almost always a cue to slow down. I have to work to restrain myself when I want to rush through the shitty feelings. I’ve recently been battling some physical pain, so today I decided to practice restraint with my 5K. As much as I wanted to push myself, I actually had to dig deeper to practice restraint and remain at a pace that did not spike physical pain. It was my second slowest time so far, but one of the mentally toughest. How do you recognize when you need to employ restraint? #5KFriday ~ woke up with the sun to get my 5K in early. The run felt good, improved my best time by 3 seconds (I’ll take it), and remained focused on just doing the best I could. I want to thank my siblings for the pep talk last week when I was feeling low about my time not improving (and thanks @grindawhey for the new circuit training ideas!). Who motivates you? #5KFriday ~ first #5Kintherain and man I was *not* feeling it today. My heart has been feeling heavy the last couple days and I think that had something to do with it. Some days will feel good, but on days that don’t, I’m showing up for myself with gentle compassion. #5KFriday ~ This challenge has really reshaped my headspace around staying present when things hurt, and it’s seeping into my day-to-day. I’ve improved my 5K time by almost 9 minutes in the last three weeks and today I was 2:47 away from my goal. It has been wildly encouraging to have so many of you doing this with me. I’m so proud of us for sticking with this.
