the first beatle wife. the american muse. these are just two of many titles used to refer to the black-american activist and former photographer. mrs. donnie starkey has been with drummer, ringo, since 1961, before all this beatle business occurred and she has made sure her seat could not be taken. and that seat is his lap!

in this short magazine interview in austria, donnie starkey answers:

y'know, people ask if whether or not i'm just here for the money but i remember marrying him when there wasn't any. i didn't care, we were living and doing what we loved..i'd just finished college when he joined the band. i was here when he left briefly and encouraged him to go back. i don't go around with him like arm candy, although if i wanted to i would. you look at photos of the boys back in 1962-1964, a lot of them were taken by me. even now, i'm working still..i do youth inspirational and motivation speeches for girls and women. i use my voice because i know others listen, sure it's because i'm with one of their favorite pop boyband members but it's an advantage i'll take any day! no harm in that, right?

THE DOCTORS *⁠･° March 1963

A small band from Liverpool is stirring things up in the rock and roll scene, but how much rock is too much rock?

The Doctors formed in June of 1961 after the five band members met at a hospital's emergency room. Since then, they have been performing at small venues, and even though they've gathered a niche community, it seems that bigger offers aren't coming their way in lieu of the band's modern (or, well, peculiar) sound.

Distortion, loud playing, and louder noise. Even when covering other artists, they make sure to add their Doctors' uniqueness to briefly make the songs their own. Some love it, most take it with a pinch of salt, but the one thing that's for certain is that none have heard anything like it before. The man guilty of the band's characteristic ring is no other than Charlie Monday, lead guitarist and songwriter alongside Eric Mye, vocalist and rhythm guitarist.

We were able to get a statement from Monday on his approach to music and the general public's reception of it.

CHARLIE MONDAY: It's often I get told that we play "noise" instead of music. I'm okay with it, because it's true: we're noisy and loud, and that's what allows us to have fun when we perform. That's what this is all about, in the end - having fun, enjoying music and time spent with friends. We want to feel alive when we're on stage, and to us life is loud and messy, even in the quiet moments.

INTERVIEWER: Are all your songs energetic? No ballads for the occasional lover?

C. MONDAY: We have some songs we don't perform in front of an audience. Not for fear of people's critiques, but simply because they're personal. Some are slow, some are cheesy, some are simply boring in some regards, but none are meant for sharing with strangers in a performance. It's just too personal, it wouldn't be the same to play them in a context we associate with chaos and fun. Eric, for instance, loves screaming his heart out on stage but also singing as sweetly as he can to the ones he cares about. I have half a mind not to force him to mix those two spaces up.

Will The Doctors' chaotic rock catch on? Or will it be soon disregarded? We have reason to believe this isn't the last we'll see of these medics, as they slowly build an audience of rocking youth.
