Solar System Tournament Round 1-14
67P/CHURYUMOV-GERASIMENKO vs HALLEY'S COMET
This is the fourteenth match of the 32s round. For this round, each contendor gets one SpaceEngine rendering and one actual image taken by astronomers or spacecraft, due to the fact that SpaceEngine doesn't render comet tails or other interesting features. Our contenders are:
67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, also known as 67P or 67P/G-C, is a comet with a period of 6.5 years. Its funky and long name is due to the fact it was discovered by two astronomers with long last names. It's suspected to be a contact binary, meaning it started from two smaller asteroids that fused together. It's the only comet anything from Earth has touched, and has been extensively surveyed and analyzed by its two visitors, Rosetta and Philae. Like all comets, its tail is generated by the sublimation of ices as the comet approaches the Sun. Although not visible to the naked eye, this comet has unique features and history unlike any other.
Visitors: Rosetta (orbit), Philae (landing (!!!))
Halley's Comet, also known as Comet Halley or simply Halley, is perhaps the most popular and easily visible comet, with recorded observations dating back to antiquity. Civilizations from around the world have seen Halley's comet once every 75 years or so. It currently has a period of 74.7 years, but its orbit shifts a lot. The average human typically only sees it once in their life. During its 1986 pass, popularity around the comet caused a massive rush of probes, known as the Halley Armada, to be sent to the comet.
Visitors: Vega 1 (flyby), Vega 2 (flyby), Giotto (flyby), Suisei (flyby), Sakigake (flyby)
