VERSE OF THE DAY: PROVERBS 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

WHAT IS THE FEAR OF THE LORD? LEARNING GOD'S WAY A reason we want to hear from God is to know how to live. We face decisions daily. Sometimes they're small, "What will I wear?" Some have more weight, "How should I spend money?" And there are big ones, "Should I marry this person?", "Change jobs?", "Move?"

God may not care about which t-shirt we choose, but he cares about us! And when something is important to us, or stressed us out, or makes us feel paralyzed by the weight of choosing the wrong thing, God isn't far off, but with us in every decision we face.

God's presence is the heartbeat of the Bible's "Wisdom Literature." These books are filled with principles-fundamental truths about how life should work. Proverbs is one of these books and basically says that if you do the right things, good things will follow. But if you do the wrong things, bad things will follow. In reality, we understand that life doesn't always go this way, but Proverbs suggests there's a positive association between following wisdom and your life.

The optimism of Proverbs, the source of its principles, and the first step it others for learning God's wisdom is "the fear of the Lord" Proverbs says, "The fear of the Lord" leads to knowledge (9:10), adds length to one's life (10:27, 14:27) is better than wealth (15:16), helps us avoid evil (16:6) and leads to safety (29:25)

it begins with recognizing and standing in awe of how big God is. He's the creator of everything. He's all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere. He's the perfect judge who administers justice, defends the vulnerable, and holds people accountable. So, in a way, the "fear of the Lord" is awareness that God is bigger and more powerful than we can imagine. And Proverbs suggests this big and powerful God is for us (1:22-23)! He's intimately involved in out lives and offers the wisdom we need. This revelation leads to humility (22:4) when we realize God knows what's best and we can trust him because he's bigger, older, and wiser than we are.

If you want to learn God's ways and know what he has for us today, spend time dwelling on his bigness, power, and unlimited perspectives. And then pray for insight and seek wisdom like you're searching for buried treasure (2:3-4) What you'll find is that God is near, is listening, and offers to do life with you.

All-knowing and All-powerful God, you are bigger than my biggest struggles and have the perspective to see more than I ever could. Lead me to a healthy fear of you. Help me stand in awe of your beauty and be humbled by your glory amd power. Guide me through the wisdom of Your Spirit and these principles found in the Bible. And please help me, learn your ways and follow you to the good life you have for me, even when that good life doesn't look like what I expect. Amen.

BE ENCOURAGED Wisdom doesn't begin with us-the created. Wisdom begins with God-the Creator. God made the world and everything in it. So if you want true wisdom for yourself and for others, look to Him. When a friend asks for advice, you can rely on and point them to the timeless wisdom in God's Word.

God, when I think about who You are and all that You've done, it overwhelms me. I am filled with awe and wonder at how powerful yet merciful You are. Deepen my knowledge of Your love and faithfulness. Fill me with wisdom that only comes from knowing You. Be the foundation of my life so that way my life reflects You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

HONOR GOD ROMANS 1:19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

The God who created the universe is eager to spend time with you. Come as you are, and draw closer to your Creator. Your presence matters here.

JOHN 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

Take a deep breath, and let that verse sink in. What does this Scripture make you think of? Meditate in this passage before bringing your requests to God.

God, when I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. I know that when You are for me, nothing can stand against me! Right now, I surrender my fears to You. Please take my concerns, shame, and problems, and replace them with Your peace and truth. Protect my mind as I continue to draw close to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

INSIGHT The name Timothy (which means “honoring God”) is the compound form of the Greek words timē (honor) and theos (God). From what’s recorded of Timothy in Scripture, he lived up to his name. He’s first mentioned in Act 16, where it’s noted that he was a disciple with a good reputation (v. 2). Paul recruited him as a member of his ministry team (vv. 3-5). Timothy’s path to belief in Jesus and maturity and usefulness began under the tutelage of his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:15). Paul mentions Timothy in many of his letters, including these accolades in Philippians 2: “I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. . . . But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel” (vv. 20, 22). GROWING UP IN GOD In her early years as a Christian author, Gayle often received winsome gifts from her publisher. Bouquets of flowers, chocolates, boxes of herbal teas. All lovely. But over time, her publisher began to send gifts with lasting value. A one-year Bible, devotionals, and prayer journals. As she used them, Gayle became a more mature believer—less distracted by frilly gifts and more committed to using her life to lead others to Christ.

This approach recalls Timothy’s growth under the mentoring of the apostle Paul. Stressing spiritual maturity, Paul advised, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Then Paul added, “Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly” (v. 16). He added, “Flee the evil desires of youth . . . . Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments. . . . And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful” (vv. 22-24).

Paul’s wise advice offers believers one other key benefit. Even opponents of Christ, when they see our mature choices in Him, may “come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil” (v. 26). So “growing up” in God has eternal outcomes beyond ourselves. Let’s not wait, therefore, to grow up in our faith. Others will benefit as well.

THE STORYBOOK FAITH A STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING JESUS, THE AUTHOR AND PERFECTED OF MY FAITH In the introduction to this study I shared a bit about how these verses inspired me to write these pages. I shared how these verses show us that Jesus is not only the author, the originator and designer of our faith, He is also the perfecter. In some versions it says He is the “finisher.” It shows us that legacies are not made, and stories are not created by those who only begin. They are made by finishers.

Those who not only start things, but perfect them—make them whole. I hope that this study, together with God’s word, has inspired you to endure the race that has been set before you. That by fixing your eyes on Jesus, our author and finisher, you too decide to be an author and a finisher of your dreams and your faith. Chapter 12 of Hebrews gives us some insight into how to do this. It sheds some light on Jesus’s mindset.

At the end of verse 2 it tells us that Jesus endured the pain of the cross for the joy set before him. I wrote about this briefly in a previous book, Joy: More Than an Emotion, a Fruit of the Spirit. I wrote about how that one phrase shows us such a clear picture of the kind of attitude it takes to obtain victory. It takes the ability to look ahead at the reward, not on your current circumstance. When Jesus was on the cross, He was able to endure because He knew that the pain He was experiencing was simply part of what was needed in order to reach the “joy” that He believed was coming.

We learned in the last chapter that faith is being able to live and act on the assurance of what we hope for. Jesus epitomized this when He was able to sacrifice himself on a cross for the assurance of a joy that lay ahead. This is the attitude that is needed to reach the joyful ending of his story. If we are to also have this attitude, then we must be able to, like Jesus, push away distractions, sin, and any unnecessary weight that entangles us. We must be able to sacrifice our current comfort in order to experience victory.

My prayer for you, as we end our time together, is that you finish strong. I pray that you are able to endure what you are facing at this present moment in the way Jesus endured the cross: with eyes fixed on the joy ahead. As someone who has endured many trials of the faith, I can tell you: there is always joy ahead. Even when you are at your lowest, the author of your story has already written in a triumphant plot twist if you are only able to endure. I believe that you have completed this study of hebrews for a reason.

I believe that the Lord connected us so that you would be encouraged to "throw off every weight, and the sin that so easily entangles” and fiercely fix your eyes on Jesus, even after this study has finished. I want to encourage you to repent of any sin that has been entangling you. I hope that afterwards you would further anchor yourself to Jesus through his word and continue to use studies like this one to “draw near to him” as we discussed in previous chapters.

I hope that you will not neglect corporate worship as we are encouraged not to do in Hebrews 10, and that you find a solid, faith-filled church to continue to grow in and faithfully attend. Finally, I hope that you will find the strength to persevere and that your faith will grow daily as you continue to get to know the author and perfecter of your story, Jesus Christ.

Amen.
