江戸期に「齋・斎」とは別字でヨミも異なる「齊・斉」が字体衝突し混用され、明治期の戸籍でも混用。戦後、新字体として「斎」と「斉」が採用されたが、戸籍で旧字体の「齋」と「齊」が残り、４つの姓があるようになった次第。「役所の人間の書き間違い」という俗耳に入りやすい説明には要警戒。
