Research into similar themes & games
I made sure I researched my target audience and other films and games related to the genre of my game.
When describing my idea to a friend I was told that it is similar to 'Dead Island' without the zombies. I thought I will research into this game in more depth to see if I can improve the idea in any way and hypothetically more successful.
Here is a review taken from www.computerandvideogames.com
This budget zombie thriller ain't too pretty but could manage to capture a cult following.
Plenty of weapon modifications
Hacking zombies down to the bone
Could appeal to budget zombie fans
Format - Xbox 360 Developer - Deep Silver
I also spoke to a friend of mine for a first account review and synopsis of the game so that I could ask them what they thought of the game etc. Here is the transcript.
Me: Could you please give a brief overview of the game?
Harrison: Basically these people are at a holiday resort, you choose your character and I was the guy and you have a really hectic party night and you wake up with the island invested with zombies. You then have to like battle them off and fight them to save yourself, yeah.
Me: What did you most like about the game?
Harrison: Well the missions were cool, they were fun and exciting.
Harrison: yeah, I like the storyline and the graphics weren't bad either.
Me: Was there anything you didn't like about the game?
Harrison: Oh, the weapon choices are awesome, like handmade stuff you smash up the zombies. The thing I don't like is it's pretty scary, made me jump a lot but if that's what you are into then I guess that's a good thing.
Me: That's all you dislike?
Harrison: Pretty much, there's things that can be improved though.
Harrison: You should be able to customize your character or at least be able to change the character throughout the game because when you choose one right at the beginning you are stuck with them for the whole game and it's a pretty long game.
Me: What about if the game had a multiplayer function as well?
Harrison: Yeah, that would be cool. I played it at my friends house and it was kinda annoying to not be able to play together on a split screen or something. Or if you're only you should be able to play online like xBox Live or the Playstation online or something.
Me: Good idea, thanks. Do you rather playing in first person or third person?
Harrison: It depends, really. If I'm fighting I like to be first person to feel immersed in the game and be really personal with what's going on. But when I'm looking around for weapons, clues, enemies and stuff like that I like to be in third person so I can have a broad view of my surroundings.
From that I got a good feel for the feautures and game play of Dead Island, it is avaragely similar to the game idea I had however without the zombies. I explained my idea to Harrison and he said it sounded like Lost the TV programme and Battle Royale a Korean film in which people are captured and forced to fight to the death, this is also almost like The Hunger Games which was an incredibly big hit in the cinemas. If my game is subtly based on that but aimed at a higher age audience like 16+ the player can then get really emotionally attached to their character they are playing to win and fight to the death against other players online around the world.
