wow i just marathoned-read through witch hat atelier after you were posting about it and im blown away
ISN’T IT SO GOOD? i love all the characters, relationships (especially coco & agathe and qifrey & orugio), and themes. honestly im so enraptured by these themes, like
the responsibility adults have to be good to children. they need to nurture them, be good to them, and be kind and forgiving if they are teachers/caregivers of them, and even if they aren’t they still need to respect their roles in society. it’s repeatedly emphasized that adults need to care for children - orugio yelling at qifrey for almost chasing after the brimhat & generally just pushing him to be the good professor his students see him as, eunie’s teacher being punished explicitly for being a bad teacher, and the ways qifrey teaches his students! how all the adults are so conscious of their duty to the children in their care!
the themes on learning something new/developing a new skill, talent, collaboration! for example, agathe learning how collaboration and mistakes can be beneficial, and when orugio tells her that her need to prove herself must come secondary to helping the common folk, as is their responsibility as witches! the narrative allowing riche to retain her individuality while also learning that she has to move outside of her comfort zone if she wants to be effective in a wider array of situations!
the themes on disability... i’m honestly really impressed! sage bel, who uses a really cool magic wheelchair - i didn’t even realize it was meant to be a mobility aid until coco visited his chambers and he very casually moved around while making tea, it was a very normalized and chill way of demonstrating that he’s paraplegic, and it’s not like. made a big deal out of, while still being present. tartah, who has a vision impairment, and the narrative emphasizes that he is skilled in his work and very knowledgeable but he’s just not accommodated, and that witch society is unkind to him! how he and coco find a spell to accommodate his impairment that doesn’t “fix” him but instead allows him to apply the knowledge he has! [SPOILER] also has a vision impairment, and that one’s more about how witch society and the way magic is set up in this world shuts out those with vision impairments. the narrative continually demonstrates the way that the society itself excludes people with vision impairments in structural ways (although it’s ironic that this is in a manga, which is an inherently visual medium). i’m interested to see where that plot goes!
i’m also just so into the worldbuilding... the strict rules that witches set in place for themselves and the disadvantages those bring. i feel that it does a good job demonstrating why the witches have so many strict rules (war crimes! the gold people! human experimentation!) while also showing that these rules are a double edged sword. orugio is so clearly a moral center of the story, and his special little chapter where he goes to the normal world is so excellent. i love orugio so much. qifrey lured me in, but orugio is such a Good Person, who prioritizes helping people but also isn’t stupid and knows which rules he should be following. he’s just so great!
i also just really like the way it continually presents that one doesn’t need to adhere to orthodoxy nor go over to the dark side... and that true strength lies in collaboration, supporting each other, and letting everyone use their own strengths and specialties in order to succeed and help others. the scene where she has to choose between the tower of books and going to safety, and instead chooses to draw a straight line - her personal skill! mwah. poetic cinema.
i also love how this is a world of Gender. the two main adult male characters only ever wear billowing skirts. i think the first time we see a main adult character wearing pants is on alaira, a woman. also, it’s so cool to see black and brown people in a manga. suzie’s design is so cute!
anyway. witch hat atelier is only 41 chapters + a couple chapters of a spinoff where the two teacherdads make meals together very domestically while all the kids are asleep. PLEASE READ WITCH HAT ATELIER
