First Scribble Squad Meet Up of 2017

Last Tuesday our 9 Story Scribble Squad had their first drawing session of the New Year! The Scribble Squad spun out of the studio’s weekly Inktober drawing sessions. Those who participated in Inktober wanted to continue the practice of coming together and sketching, and so the lunch time Scribble Squad was created. The crew meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the studio lunchroom to share in the practice of drawing together… oh and eat lunch. Occasionally some peanut butter may get on a page!

At this month’s session, the Squad chatted about New Year’s resolutions and where artists look to for inspiration on what to draw (a frequent conversation), for example these stunning images from The British Hair Awards - Afro Finalist Collection.

Animator, Samantha Braithwaite also showed off one of her super cool new drawing tools, Lyra Jumbo Watersoluble Graphite Stick, which lets you add water to your pencil drawing and get a watercolour effect!

Can’t wait to see what happens at next month’s meet up. Any ideas on what the Squad should draw? Suggestions are welcome!

Creature Crafting!

We are totally digging these awesome miniature characters that we discovered on the desk of 9 Story VFX animator, Omar Al Hafidh. It turns out Omar sculpts these original monsters in his spare time, when he not busy animating dynamic sparks and splashes on a variety of 9 Story productions.

Learn more about Omar’s process and motivation behind these pieces below.

1.       What is your role at 9 Story Media Group?

I work as a VFX animator. I animate special effects... like fire, water, dust, smoke and electricity!

2.       What was your motivation/inspiration for making the sculptures?

I just wanted to explore other visual art venues.

3.       Did you learn anything along the way while crafting them?

I learned how to design a character's pose in a 3D space vs. designing a character by drawing on a flat surface.

4.       Do they have names?

They don't have names. They just came out of my mind... I guess these are the kind of characters and designs that my mind think of when it's in default mode, since I was influenced by fighting video games like "Street Fighter" and "Tekken" since I can remember.

Transit Sketches

We’ve been absolutely loving 9 Story 2D Animator, Faez Alidoosti’s daily subway drawings! 

“Everyday I spend almost 2-3 hours as my travel time between home and work using TTC. Besides listening to music, this chunk of time gives me a big opportunity to improve myself either by reading or drawing .

As a cartoonist and animator, I do believe drawing to the brain, is like workout to the body’s muscles. The more you practice, the stronger you get.

It is a process of observation, study and practice  which keeps my brain and hand warmed up . So I would call it "Brain Workout" :)

And above all it is a very joyfull activity.”

9 Story Takes On the INKtober Challenge!

9 Story took part in last month’s worldwide daily drawing challenge INKtober, started by renowned illustrator Jake Parker. 

Each Tuesday in October, a team of 9 Story staffers diligently met in the lunch room to draw, doodle, and discuss art, creative techniques and occasionally partake in the odd sweet treat. But the weekly studio meet ups were not the only way 9 Story staffers took part in this awesome challenge, others who couldn’t make the lunch date or worked off site posted their daily drawings on Instagram and Twitter. The above images are just a few examples of the amazing works of “ink” created by our 9 Story team, but you can see even more of their fabulous work here online.

And since the #INKtober crew had such an inspiring time together, they’ve created a new drawing club called The Scribble Squad that meets once a month to get together, get inspired and draw something!
