yiddish! (part 1)
when I started this blog the idea of learning Yiddish seemed like a pipe dream. It still does to some extent, but I’ve decided to start learning anyway. I thought I would share what I’ve been doing here in case anyone is wondering. Keep in mind that I have no idea what I’m doing ;)
1) I try and spend 15 minutes a day. It’s a manageable/realistic amount but I still feel like I can make practice.
2) I started by learning the alphabet. Using resources from the Yiddish Book Center I made three quizlets: the names of the letters, the type of letter they are [constant, vowel, etc], and the sound they make. I go through these every time I practice, when I get something wrong I start it and practice it again.
3) I watched a video, also from the Yiddish Book Center, which shows the cursive spelling of the letters, as well as their pronunciation. I watch this every time I practice and I practice writing the cursive along with it.
4) I am currently going through the other exercises provided by the Yiddish Book Center.
5) Using a list of the 1000 most common words in Yiddish I made another quizlet of the first ten. I have just started studying this every time I practice.
I’ve only been studying for about a month but I’m really excited. If you’re learning too let me know! And I’ll update again in a bit!
