There was a strong knock on Dale’s door, and Dale opened the door to Helen.
She was breathless, and she drew her hands through her hair, evidently stressed by something.
“Thank you for umm… thanks for staying.”
She moved her hands to her hips, pacing around nervously, Dale following her quietly behind.
“Okay, Dale, I need to tell you something, and I just need you to… not to freak out. But, umm… Evelyn Walters came to my house this morning.”
“What.” Dale responded. This was unusual.
“And umm, well…” Helen swore and looked away.
“What, Helen?” Dale was confused, and worried.
“So Geoff, Geoff’s been getting been getting phone calls from Donna Gillies about umm… information that she might have in regards to you and a male cameraman.” Helen at last revealed.
Panic filled Dale’s eyes.
“She called me too,” Helen’s voice wobbled. “She called me yesterday twice, and left messages, which I ignored.”
“Geoff?” Dale whispered, fearfully.
“Geoff’s made no comment.” Helen replied.
Dale glanced into his box-covered lounge room.
“Dale, has something happened since, umm… since we separated that…”
Dale sunk into the single seater. He shook his head and Helen nodded.
“Okay, well… that means it’s just Geoff and myself that she’s called. And nobody else knows, do they?”
Dale glanced down, pained. “Gerry knows. I told Gerry.”
Helen deeply inhaled and looked away. Dale clapped his hands together, and desperate eyes met Helen’s.
“What do I do?”
Helen heard the cry within his voice, sadly glancing at him.
She shook her head. “I still think that there’s a really huge chance that this will just blow over. Just go in. Just do your job. Act confident. Just… it’s what you do.”
Dale wiped his eyes and sniffed.
“Come on, get up, get your bag, you go into work, and you act like everything’s normal,” Helen advised him, grabbing his satchel and heading towards the door. Dale rose from the couch unsure.
“And I do… I do think this could blow over. I just… I just needed you to know.”
The front door swung shut, and Dale breathed in shakily. What other option did he have?
