The tale that he created the Varterral to protect a town he liked, at first glance, makes you think that he's not a complete asshole. And I mean that's true. I don't think Dirthamen actively was set on destroying everyone and everything; but he certainly was an advantageous guy. He clearly saw a benefit in rescuing this place for his own means. Rescuing them from destruction because it just so happened to be a place he adored. How many other villages were beset with monsters and problems that he did not rescue because they weren't important to him?
PLUS by rescuing this village, would they not then adore him above all others? I dunno man, I think he created that Varterral for his own gain at the end of the day.
