Song Review: John Oates - “Reunion”

Following the public spat and presumed split of Hall & Oates, and the apparent icing of the rootsy Good Road Band, John Oates goes fully solo with the ironically titled Reunion.

The lights at the party burn bright/I’m leaving early tonight/I’m makin’ ready/I’m gettin’ ready/I’m makin’ ready for my reunion, Oates sings on the titular lead single from the forthcoming (May 17) LP.

An Oates-A.J. Croce co-write that features Sierra Hull on mandolin, “Reunion” is a schmalzy ballad in the singer-songwriter vain and outfitted with acoustic guitars, cello and chirpy backgrounds. It sounds very 1972 - more Bread than James Taylor - and would’ve been too precious in that era, too.
