Getting a better picture of Jade, through various small observations.
As someone stuck on a desert island, she seems to feel the most literally Homestuck out of the beta kids. She vents her frustration with being trapped on a bunch of globes in the grand foyer.
We get it, granddad. You like to travel around the world going on adventures and stuff! Lousy goddamn stupid globes.
Despite the Good Dog Best Friend routine she is somewhat afraid of Bec.
TG: if i were you i would just take that fucking devilbeast out behind the woodshed and blow its head off GG: heheheh! GG: i dont think i could if i tried!!!
That is not a friendly sentiment! She expresses her unease again later but claims that she is long over it.
Becquerel has always managed to elude your prognosticative faculties. He is completely invisible to your intuition somehow, a property almost totally unique to him. -------- It used to freak you out a little, but you have long since grown accustomed to it.
Now for the nonsense: I’ve also been digging into the significance of Charles Dutton, to whom Jade’s epigraph is misattributed. His face also comes up when she scribbles into her pictogram modus. I’m inclined to think that the implication is that some media of Dutton’s holds special significance to Jade? So here’s speculation.
The wiki suggests his presence in Homestuck as a visionary seeing into dream bubbles stems from his role as a motivational speaker on the L-Word, but doesn’t offer up much evidence. If true, the show’s general relevance is Jade exploring relationships and sexuality through a show about an elaborate dating network? So that’s one possibility. Also, I found out that “Earthlings” used to be slang for “lesbians”, so that’s cool and relevant.
I’m more fond of the idea that Jade knows Dutton from Alien 3, where he plays the religious leader of a bunch of apocalyptic space prisoners. In the movie, Sigourney Weaver is trapped and pregnant with a Xenomorph queen, dealing with the implications thereof. Jade almost certainly has cancer from her excess of radiation exposure, and Space player make deals with Echidna, the mother of all monsters --- so I felt like Jade might feel some kinship there. Like, she might regard Bec as on par with fluffy xenomorph.
Since Weaver got her head shaved in order to evoke Joan of Arc, I’m also tempted to believe that gardenGnostic is evidence of Jade being connected to another figure that was compelled to act through visions, but idk! I’m just really strongly inclined to look for spiritual predecessors.
