        “Wow yeah, thanks for that one,” The Alpha huffed through his nostrils, eyeing the boy from across the room as he continued to flip through the glossy pages of his magazine. A page tore then from a stuttered sweep of his fingers, that glistening gaze of blue lifting up to regard Stiles quietly. His heart swelled to hear those words, the most he was able to offer being a thin purse of his lips as his head rocked into a nod. “Thank you, Stiles. You’re a good Beta. ‘m glad you decided to join us.”

      Raleigh had been alone for so many years, left to the cruel fates of loss that had stripped him of family and pack. It was something he had accepted those few long years after the inevitable loss of everything he had ever had, or had come as close to acceptance as his beast heart would let him. It was ruled mostly by the hatred for the damned souls that had stolen from him all that had ever given his life meaning, a wrath that he was sure would be the end of him one day. But through some intervention he’d managed to overcome his losses and rebuild, took in wolves that had suffered their own measure of loss and added them to his pack, became their leader. Their unwavering guardian that had far too many times before spilled blood in the name of their safety— and would continue to leave a wake of bodies for as long as anyone tried to harm his family.

     But it wasn’t the same as before, because yes, he loved this family like he’d loved the one he’d lost, but something was different. Something was missing and for the life of him, Raleigh couldn’t possibly conceive a notion as to why. There was still a hole left in his heart and an ache in his belly. But never did he mention it to the others, hadn’t the heart to. So instead he had settled with living with the gap left in him, that was, until he’d stumbled upon that boy.

               Stiles.

      That boy was more trouble than he was worth, at least, Raleigh had thought in the beginning. But he soon realized that the snarky teen was exactly what he’d been missing, just what he needed to fill that hole inside of him. There was love there, as a father loved a son, or a brother loved another brother and that beyond all things culled the rage in his heart like he never even thought possible. Stiles reminded him of his pup, the spritely little shit that got into so much trouble and still managed to bail Raleigh out of it when he needed it. Stiles was that connection to the family he’d lost, made him remember the fondness he’d buried beneath the guilt and the grief.

      “Are you going to come and eat or do I have to down this entire box by myself?”

      Raleigh was culled from his thoughts, throwing his head to glance over at the kitchen where Stiles was standing with an open box of pizza. He scoffed then, rolled his eyes, “You even think about eating that entire thing by yourself I’m gonna slap you.” It was an empty threat, that thin line of his lips breaking off into a small smile as he pressed himself up to his feet and shuffled into the kitchen. The Alpha still had quite a bit of time to gain the kid’s trust, and though they’d made good progress so far, Raleigh had every intention on making sure he earned that trust, and when he finally had a good grip on it— he planned on cherishing it for as long as he was able.
