The AB 2343 bill introduced by Mike Gatto (Democrat, Burbank) represents a huge opportunity for the State of California to improve the welfare of animals in shelters. Current laws stipulate that local animal shelters must keep the animals 72 hours before they euthanize them. In addition, there are no provisions regarding veterinary care, which are now up to the agency to implement. If voted, the new bill will change all of that and would add significant protection to shelter animals. For instance, animals would be required to be kept six days before being put down. Moreover, a brand new $10 million per annum grant for implementing life-saving activities at shelters across the state of California would kick in. New shelters will be built, thus reducing crowding pressures. In a nutshell, the new law is bound to provide better caring for the animals The law has been endorsed by animal shelter experts, animal advocated and veterinarians.
