since i love the godfather, how about some meta about family & 'the' family
ayyy so clearly i missed this (and idk how long it’s been since you sent this in, my apologies!) but let me just talk a little bit about how different vito and michael are. like all of la cosa nostra, their focus was obviously on the family. family comes first, always. however, vito’s career as the don of the corleone family was all about family and friendly connections no matter how much of a businessman he may have been. vito was compassionate. on the other hand, we have michael here, who had his own damn brother killed for crossing him (in a way that might’ve even been accidental and unintentional, given fredo’s naivety). his wife left him, taking their kids. while vito died surrounded by family and sunshine, michael died alone in the company of dogs (one of the few parts i liked about the godfather part iii is this parallel tbh.)
michael may have liked to convince himself that he was all about family, but power and ambition defined him. he loved his kids and kay and apollonia and the rest of his family, but power always got in the way. his hunger for power put his family in danger (ending in the deaths of apollonia and mary, both of which he was helpless to save) and he couldn’t do anything about it. and, because of this, the corleone family fell from its former “glory” under vito, to ruin under michael. the unity fell apart with fredo’s death and even before that.

he’s been tracking the movements of the criminal for weeks now, silent in his movements and effective in his info gathering. it hasn’t been easy, certainly, even SHIELD with all its eyes has had difficulty obtaining a clear, identifying visual of the assailant. but it hadn’t stopped steve -- not when there were lives at stake. there was ALWAYS something that could be done, there was always a way. and steve had kept at it, had re-traced the man’s every footstep until he could move forward and predict their next move. and that’s what had led him here -- to the dilapidated warehouse on the outskirts of a small-time city.
even in the silence, his footsteps are quiet, a product of years of experience and training. his weight hasn’t been a disadvantage of his for decades now, honed instead into an advantage. there’s no sign of life here -- and steve’s beginning to question the validity of his intel, wondering if he’d been WRONG after all. but this was the last known location of the man, only just hours ago, so it couldn’t be --
until he sees a shadow move, and his shield is already on his arm, angled precisely and ready to slice through the air and straight into its target before steve catches himself and stops mid swing. the shock on his face is prevalent, and he straightens up, eyes narrowing as he tries to see more clearly through the dark of the night.
