opening: i figure with around 66+ fics on ao3, several being about haymitch himself, now's a time as good as any to define what haymitch is to me, and how i manifest his character in my own writing.
these are just what has influenced me over time, and how i approach him! i hope you enjoy! (not SOTR compliant/anti SOTR. this is about og trilogy haymitch only.)
𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗡𝗘: 𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗙
the most important part of how i approach haymitch happens to be his grief. fighting against 47 other children in the arena & losing three of his own district partners to horrific fates (not SOTR specific) causes a hefty blow to your average sixteen year old. that, and the way of his survival being the exact way his family comes to slaughter (see; the forcefield) burning an endless guilt through him in the aftermath. so in the span of a year, haymitch encounters around fifty deaths connected to him — the kids of the second quell, his mother, brother & girl. all whilst having been a child soldier, a murderer, now bathed in endless riches and success.
losing his entire support system happens to be a gutpunch hard enough to make him jagged to some, but my haymitch maintains a lust for life that is only smothered after losing a large amount of his own tributes & mentees. paired with my interpretation of haymitch being one of the first few trafficked victors, the bulk of his twenties are spent academically (pursuing a PhD in psychology,) going to university, as well as enriching himself with as much opportunity as possible — given that he has nothing left to lose.
paired with endless success and the degradation of his autonomy and body meanwhile, he crashes and burns hard into his thirties — when the bodies of his tributes pile high and the call of vices beckons him to a solid format of salvation. by 33, he's something of a functioning alcoholic, with the definition changing as his dependency worsens. by 40, he's a stump of who he used to be, misguided by the drink and made hopeless by the mass grave which lies at his helpless feet.
𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗧𝗪𝗢: 𝗣𝗥𝗘-𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
abernathy extended, otherwise abrievated as AE, is the retelling of haymitch's life with my headcanons interwoven from before suzanne collins published sunrise on the reaping, with the series begining with the death of his father, experienced at age twelve. (click here for the full family bizz)
hasil abernathy dies at the hands of miner's rebellion; leading a two-month strike where in which he and many co-workers attempted to advocate for higher wages, and began to do illegal game trading in the hob in order to continue supporting their individual families. when charged for misdemeanor, illegal trading/poaching, and rebellious conspiracy, hasil is put to death — whipped until his body gave out in public.
this shapes haymitch into a harsh, splitting image of his father — who disallows the idea of being protected and remains his own self-saviour when faced with the role of the breadwinner alongside his mother, cassia. further tasked with looking after his ten year old brother by the name of kipley, haymitch becomes entangled in rowdy scuffles and dangerous outings in order to survive and keep his back up.
AE chronicles the family grief permeating his surname, the eventual games that overloom, the love he experiences for the people around him (as well as his girl,) and the tragedy that comes to befall him, and how it moulded him into the man we come to know within the hunger games trilogy.
𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘: 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗕𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗠
tied heavily to my interpretation of haymitch is the idea of the self made cynic, the allegory of his canon counterpart being an example of war veterans, and essentially, the eventual pariah.
as the self made cynic, haymitch repeats the notion of crawling out of an unmade grave — wading through the scars that death gives him, while being unable to die at all. he constantly has his back facing one way, marching onwards for the sake of his own means, and scarcely doing much for others, not when they serve him — but when they reinstate his dead hope. his character is circulated by cynicality, nihilism & self-destruction — reinforced by his imminent losses and regret to save. in this, he becomes a self-appointed saviour; trying to reverse the past that refuses to loosen its grip on him (best shown canonically with katniss & peeta.)
my war veteran haymitch study can be found here, which explains my method to exploring his victorhood. i really find that many war poems seem to resonate well with his character, which i'll display below.
You were only David’s father, But I had fifty sons When we went up in the evening Under the arch of the guns, And we came back at twilight – O God! I heard them call To me for help and pity That could not help at all. Oh, never will I forget you, My men that trusted me, More my sons than your fathers, For they could only see The little helpless babies And the young men in their pride. They could not see you dying, And hold you while you died.
E. ALAN MACKINTOSH, IN MEMORIAM. (associated with his mentorship & the 46 tributes of district twelve)

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, Bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.
WILFRED OWEN, DULCE ET DECORUM EST. (based on PTSD & attitudes to victorhood/winning the games.)

End of story, except not really. His blood-shadow stays on the street, and out on patrol I walk right over it week after week. Then I’m home on leave. But I blink and he bursts again through the doors of the bank. Sleep, and he’s probably armed, and possibly not. Dream, and he’s torn apart by a dozen rounds. And the drink and the drugs won’t flush him out – he’s here in my head when I close my eyes, dug in behind enemy lines, not left for dead in some distant, sun-stunned, sand-smothered land or six-feet-under in desert sand, but near to the knuckle, here and now, his bloody life in my bloody hands.
SIMON ARMITAGE, REMAINS. (on PTSD & remembrance.)
as the pariah, which occurs later on when we get to his fourties — haymitch is looked down upon by several characters due to his alcoholism and dismissive behavior, and the automatic blame which falls upon him after failing to save 46 other tributes. he is underestimated for his public delinquency and squalor, easy to chalk up as nothing but a maudlin, hermited drunk with nothing but the bottle as company. we see this betrayed once his mentor personality shows, and his later games & participation in the second rebellion ploy is revealed.
𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥: 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦.
as a bonus, below is all of the essentials that i associate with haymitch's character, usually based on vibes or traits.

There was once a pretty lass who could exhume the pristine glass contents of his tinsel'd tomb His malady, he once named Gamine lived in a stretched-white canvas room She eyed his burnt pile of vile-dirge verse as mayflys & junebugs, & smoggy dirigibles fluttered gently out of her empty purse 🐞

50x50 — A COMPILATION OF MY HAYMITCH CENTRIC SERIES
beginners' note: i was reminded to do a summary of abernathy extended a long while ago, but i figured, since i'm getting so much more thg mutuals as of recent, why not compile my current lot? my hunger games fics often align with trilogy canon, and completely diverges from the world of SOTR based on my vehement hatred of the prequel. so here's everywhere you can find haymitch in my main streamline of works (as he takes up say, all of them.)
ABERNATHY EXTENDED — CHARACTER STUDIES | 50k WORDS, 26 WORKS.
initially created based on the original abernathy extended full family ancestry post made on sept 28th, 2024 on my original account (redux found here,) AE details the missing details of a pre-sotr haymitch interpretation written by myself — where the focus is his home life, his struggles & oppressions under poverty, and the true existence of a life before the games. suffering through the loss of his father at the beginning of the series, haymitch dives into maturity as a young boy turned soldiered, preparing for a fate not yet known until it hits him.
FIC SPOTLIGHT: TO THE SUFFERING | 1083 WORDS.
This was the legacy of their family name. Blood, execution, welts. Nothing but tragedy where vitality should breathe, and everything like death marring the open air like a miasma. His father had died years ago. His mother in cruel procession. His own mother next, with her youngest tied to the hearse. Maybe Haymitch had died and he was unaware of it; had metamorphosed into the anguish that had married him, and the anger that would never divorce from his soul.
KING OF THE HORSEFLIES — THE 50TH HUNGER GAMES AND ONWARDS | 31K WORDS, 8 WORKS.
king of the horseflies (which takes its name from the multichapter of the same name in the series) contains post-sotr works containing the mid & post games segments of abernathy extended. it depicts haymitch at the very crux of his grief after losing his allies alongside his family, with his only support his mentor (who i chose to be seeder,) alongside his fellow victors. it is the most unfinished part of the series.
FIC SPOTLIGHT: TAKING YOU DOWN, (WHEN I GO DOWN) | 11K, 3/? CHAPTERS.
The Second Quarter Quell. Twice as many tributes. Twice as many graves to bury in the family plots. It makes my skin crawl, the amount of kids sent to die. Last year, it was Aileen Marsh and Anton Fetch; two kids from the merchant part of home. Pearly white skin and saltwater eyes. Neither kid could hold a pitchfork for their lives in the swampy massacre of their arena; and Anton happened to crack his head open on a rock during the Fourth day, drowning in the viscous shallows. Aileen had it no better, since they chopped off her pale head and had it roll across the dirt.
THE BILE SERIES — THE HUNGER GAMES | 10K WORDS, 6 WORKS.
bile is also a self-titled series based on a fic! it depicts the later adulthood of haymitch as a mentor and victim to addiction, alongside the idea of being sexually trafficked under snow. it is the most surrealist & discomforting of all of my thg works (outside of the cannibalism ones i suppose) and features several topics such as drug overdose, sexual abuse, child death & suicide.
FIC SPOTLIGHT: BILE | 1766 WORDS.
They don't have to sell him this time around to get a proper encounter. A sponsor saunters his way once, makes polite conversation with batted eyes and sultry, plumped-up lips and it doesn't take too long for her to worm him through the throng to some private room. Whatever pays, he thinks, as she tampers with his drink and he soon forgets the slide and pull of hands moving down, further down. He'll forget her kiss, the warmth of her heat with a few more bottles the next time he needs to sleep.

Skin stretched over muscle will bruise as some cruel God permits, and death will root herself in him as the vain plant which commands further loss. The death of himself had been brought on well away from now, in areas almost too dim to light. He thinks that if he lives past Seeder's age, having surpassed his mother's own, these years will prove a special sort of haunting for a spectral sort of man borne from him.
